What was your expectations when McMenemy first took charge?

Low, even from the start when there was a level of euphoria over him signing I didn’t like the arrogance of the man and just had a bad feeling about it, one of very few I didn’t feel good about.

I was chuffed to blazes, thought the good times would be a given. My dad said on the day it was announced (made national TV) it would be a disaster. Called him a lower league manager who had got lucky at Southampton.

5 games into the season. 5 defeats & no goals scored.....................last time I argued football with my dad.

Very excited 1st game v Blackburn at home.
Think we got beat 2-0
Haway the lads
His coach was most hated man on wearside -apart from lawrie-at the end

Lew Chatterley?

That Blackburn game was my first ever Sunderland game, I was 8. A few months or so earlier, when he was rumoured to be taking over, we'd been on the beach in South Shields and Nick Pickering was sunbathing next to us. My dad got me to go and ask him if McMenemy was on his way - 'no idea' was what he said. Pretty shit story really 😂😂

Also, my memory might be playing tricks but I think Bobby Saxton might’ve been Blackburn manager that day.

Correct

Sure he was the highest paid Manager in the country with us

Scuttled off with his tail between his legs less than two years later.
I was over the moon, we were on the national news that night and everything.

Odd to remember he lasted two seasons near enough - can you imagine that high profile a failure being still in his job in this day and age? Potter got 7 months for example.
