What was your expectations when McMenemy first took charge?

I was over the moon when he came to Sunderland on I believe £150,000 pa plus a place on the board. I saw him on local TV down south talking about being unfairly sacked. The lying twat wasn't sack, he did a moonlight flit and left Sunderland up shit creek. Didn't he also employ his daughter as a secretary at the club and gave her a wage well above what a normal secretary would receive.

Was the highest paid manager in the country when he came here. Madness.

My dad couldn’t contain his excitement and woke me up to tell me we were back. Kennedy and Gates seemed like massive coups( Gatesey ended up being good value). It was perceived as a massive and ambitious move. Unfortunately we soon learned he was bloody useless and his strategy was just to let experienced players do what they want.

Ten games to avoid relegation, PDC and DA managed it with fewer games. Stokoe has to take some of the blame, although I understand why many don't want to.
No blame whatsoever in my view. Missed penalties from Proctor in vital end of season games were the difference in the end. Tiny margins.

Very excited 1st game v Blackburn at home.
Think we got beat 2-0
Haway the lads
His coach was most hated man on wearside -apart from lawrie-at the end

Lew Chatterley?
I went to the match with high hopes, as McMenemy had a good record. We were awful and it didn't get better as the season went on.

my dad never swore much, but when McM was involved with the England setup, every single time it showed him on the screen it was “get him off the TV what’s he even doing there the useless bastard should be shot with shit”

my dad knew him as a lad, said he was a shit footballer and mag so didn't have high hopes. turned out worse than he expected.

couple of years ago I got talking to a couple on holiday who recognised my accent an said they had been close friends with Lawrie. A bit awkward when I had to tell them I wouldn't accept any nice words about him.

Only Moyes out ranks him as a Sunderland villain imo.

I have worked a lot in Southampton and they think the sun shines out of his arse. I always put them right and they don't like it.
Lawrie, oh Lawrie Mac, we want our money back.

Personally thought it was the start of big things.

Couldn’t have been more wrong.

Some of the worst football we ever played.
Bobby Saxton was in charge of Blackburn that game too
That shows how shit we were.

I was over the moon when we signed Kennedy, George Burley, Frankie Gray and Gatesy. A blue print transfer strategy that would drag us down again in the end, overpaying aging stars to finish out their days with us like knackered horses. Gatesy being the exception as he turned out to be Defoe-esk.
Mind, I never felt as despondent in those years as I did in 95, under Buxton, when I really thought we were going back to the third division with no hope of ever coming back. Thank God Peter Reid saved us that season with only seven games to go. From despair to joy for the next 5 years, then back again. It's the Sunderland way.
Lets hope KLD and Reg have broken that trend.
