Lion King at the Sunderland Empire

The Lion King is not my cup of tea but I don't doubt that 1,000's will love it. The Empire is one of the few theaters in the North of England that can house a show like that because of its size particulaly backstage.

I know that Sunderland Council's have made some very short-sighted decisions over the years like the notorious demolition of the old Town Hall but its purchase of the Empire in the 1960's saved theater for the city. It's also nice to see that rather than being tucked away on outer edges of the city centre as it always seemed to be recent city developments are having the effect of making the Empire more centralised. That's got to be a plus for drawing in a regional audience which I am sure this show is aimed at.

For those who wonder about the standing don't forget that the Empire Palace (as it was originally called) was built first and foremost as a Music Hall and there were plenty of facilities made available for standing in those days. As a music hall The Empire had the reputation of having a very demanding audience. My old dad saw Ted Ray get the "bird" the night he played there just after the War. When it became a "theater" it became much more respectable.

Who goes to see a theatre show and gets standing tickets??? Why would you even bother with that.
Took the missus to the pop up Shakespeare theatre in York a few years ago.

Got standing tickets for the novelty of it, I bloody regretted it. Forgot to factor in how long Shakespeare stuff goes on for

Didn't help that England had just beat Sweden 2-0 and I was three sheets to the wind like.

Saw this in London and not sure if it was just because it was hyped up to me more etc. but was pretty disappointed with it tbh

Would put Back to the Future, new Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Wicked above it

Bought tickets for my mum and kids for Xmas.

Had no idea to check the fixture list as it turns out it's good Friday and I'm gonna have to miss the Hull game. 😔

Len harper saved the empire in 70s I think
Remember at the time the Tories were twisting about what a waste it was

Aye but add £1000’s to get there. Stop being a tight bugger and treat them.

Our lass thinks like that and I am very much of the mindset that I’d rather just spend the money. No right or wrong obviously.
Literally just back from Disney, and watched the lion King show when we were there.
About 3k all in. For 4 full days.

Fuck paying 300 for one show. It's just not happening.

You’re still a tight bastard.

I didn’t watch a single show at Disney.

That's good value.
But £95 for normal tickets is just crazy. I can't be chucking £300 to take the eldest to watch a show.
All the tickets aren't 95.00. I'm going twice and one ticket was 95.00 but when I was asked to go again with another friend we only paid 65.00.

Is it any good? I’ve got tickets for it in April for me and the other half (no).

Loved the film like (cartoon version), probably my favourite ever Disney film.
