Running thread 2023

Steady 4 miles yesterday and 6.5 miles today. Feeling good and could easily have done another 4-5 miles today I think. Just so happened the route I went, passed my grandparents house and I said I’d pop in earlier.

Managed another HM distance this morning.

Felt like it was a constant battle not to stop, particularly early on. Seemed to ease into it a lot more from 10k onwards, struggling on a few of the hills but managed to keep pushing and felt fairly comfortable from 17k onwards.

Managed to do my 3rd run in the space of a week, this morning. My plantar and knee, touch wood, seem to be holding up well which is something I’ve really struggled with for many years now. I’ve managed to get from 10:39/mi down to 9:07/mi in that time, which I’m very happy with considering I’ve not ran with consistency for some time. I’ve ran between 4 - 7 mile over those 3 days. I’m still some way away from where I want to be distance wise, but I don’t want to just go all in too soon and risk my knee/plantar flaring up.

Right, turns out its not my achilleas alone at all. Its actually plantar fasciitis injury. I'm not significantly better going off some of the excercises I've been given. Its extremely sore but just wondering if anyone else has had this and how you recovered. Also if I chose to push on am I likely to do serious damage?

normally rest for PF, roll a bottle or can on underside of foot and put your front of foot against a stair with toes pointing up and push your knee forward to stretch. Eccentric heel drops to strengthen calves

I’ve been rolling a tennis ball under my foot for months on end now and seems to have done the trick (touch wood). Even sat at work I’ve been rolling it under my desk all day 😂 also been doing various stretches bringing my toes up towards my body.

Tried with the rolling pin. Doing all the stretches on you tube videos. It's not working so far. Rested for 10 days and it's worse not better. Got compression socks on for bed.

Guessing This won't be better by April and will have a choice to rest and run with no training or run in pain and hope it gets no worse.

Entered 2 big runs, I'm not backing out now.

Are you sure it's PF? Some neuromas can present similarly but the cause, treatment & prognosis are very different.

Symptoms seem to fit. I've been trying compression socks. Knacked the first day but seems to be having slight effect, mind that could be when removing them and having a hot bath. It hurt walking around on Monday but slightly better today. Not sure if I should run at weekend as may set me back, problem is if I don't get back to it soon I'm in for a very tough run next month,

Done a few 5ks this year and started playing forkball again but been really suffering with pain in me kneecaps and it’s really getting me down. I haven’t been able to run properly for last couple of weeks :(

I had what sounds very similar issues-a few years back -saw specialist and he said very soon you will need new knee/s if you keep running ( and footy is a no no I was told ) I stopped running got fatter and it cheesed me off .Looked at cycling but not same and at my age 60 I didn’t feel safe on roads .
Anyway the Mrs (nope ) suggested yoga to strengthen it.She swears by it.
Well it was the hardest thing physically I’ve ever done and I was one of two blokes there and was awful at it.
However I could gradually feel the improvement in strength and started slow jogging again -I did pier to pier last couple years and no pain in legs.
Not sure on the science of it all but it’s certainly massively helped me it just seems blokes don’t like it -in fact the yoga teacher said “ if I called it strength and conditioning it would be full of fellas”.
It could be worth a discussion with doctors/ yoga instructor -I took it easy on my knee at first -but gradually built up the yoga and it’s fine now ( I don’t go now as I’m where I want to be ) and back playing 6 a side .
Just a thought and -good luck marra

Cheers mate I’ll definitely look into that. I am a big lad and I think losing some weight would help too. But running is something I enjoy to lose that weight. But yeah thanks again I have a yoga mat and gonna get on researching yoga for strengthening knees.

Back at it. Heavily strapped up.and it still hurt. Managed 15 miles in 2 hours 35. Slow going to protect injury. Fear tomorrow as when adrenaline wears off its likely to hurt like a bugger. Days rest and hope I can increase distance next week. Got a lot of support socks to stretch muscles so hoping it works.

Blasted an early 10km yesteday, went from mine (Philadelphia) to washy village, second run of this route, survived up worm hill and kept it comfy, managed to finish it in 60mins so happy with that!
