New Music Releases Thread

My favourites:

Deathcrash - Return
Charles Watson - Yes
The Simps - Siblings
Young Jesus - Shepherd Herd
Sweet Pill - Where The Heart Is
Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You
Foals - Life Is Yours

I admittedly need to go back and listen to a few more as I’ve not been utterly blown away by any record this year.
I did forget FJM and Arctic Monkeys. Thought their releases were great.
That simps album is brilliant. Absolutely love it

Richard Dawson: were it a 40 minute album, minus opening 41 minute track "The Hermit", it would be brilliant. As it is, flawed genius.
I've heard The Hermit a couple of times now (streaming) and it hasn't won me over yet, although I quite like the opening 10 mins and ending 10 mins. Need to spend more time with the whole album (heard it only once). I'd bought it as a gift for the kids to give me for Christmas so it's still in the cellophane (for now)! Hopefully by the time I go to see him in April I'm fully in to it. If he plays the Hermit live, I'd almost have time to drive home go to the toilet and drive back to the gig.

Aidan Moffat has a new album out on 2/12 under his Nyx Nótt guise.

Currently listening to Danger Mouse & Black Thought. This is excellent stuff. Really enjoyed the DM + Karen O album in 2019 which led to me trying this one.

My somewhat cobbled together review of the week's new and newish stuff:

Tom Skinner: this came out a while back. I think it's the first solo release from The Smile/The Comet Is Coming man. drums to the fore, quite abstract sort of future jazz.
Rich Ruth: one I missed from the summer. Sort of ambient psych jazz, I guess. Very engaging.
Daniel Bachman: comes on like a banjo led GSYBE!. Apocalyptic instrumental tracks based around radio broadcasts about weather events. Excellent.
Nadine Khouri: Vocals ahoy! Her second (?) album which develops on her fine debut. Very good.
Jemma Freeman and the Cosmic Something: sort of prog-grunge so big on the guitar. It's very good.
Duke Garwood: low key blues based songs, impressive, heavy on vibes.
Gaye Su Akyol: Turkish prog folk which steps into glam rock at times. Enjoyable.

Album of the week: that'd be Daniel Bachman.

There seem to be a few releases next week then things really slow down until January.

Quite enjoyed Lois Cole album (Quality over opinion) - it’s particularly odd and nuts but has something about it though apologies if I am really late to that one.

caroline - caroline (eight white private school kids faff about on guitars and strings for an hour, it's great and so self-indulgent)
missed this first time round, been listening to it this week and i think i really like it. in the mood for self-indulgent noodling currently so its right up my strasse.

tak.

My top 10

1. deathcrash - return
2. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
3. The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention
4. Viagra Boys - Cave World
5. Vieux Farka Touré & Khruangbin - Ali
6. Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You
7. caroline - caroline
8. Gilla Band - Most Normal
9. Wu-Lu - LOGGERHEAD
10. Warmduscher - At the Hotspot

Not the best of years tbf however the the top 2 were phenomenal. May have missed a few off from earlier in the year. Honourable mentions who didn’t quite make it or haven’t been out long enough to get in the list:

Decius
Daniel Avery
Jockstrap
Richard Dawson
black midi

Gig of the year has to be deathcrash at The Cluny 2. Must have been about 8 of us there you could hear the lass behind the bar working the card machine during the quieter parts of their songs. I felt bad at the turnout but it sort of added to the whole thing and I’ve never heard a band sound as good live in years. My lass who had never gave them a listen was blown away by the end she ended up buying the LP and a t shirt from them. Canny enough lads.

There's a bar in the Cluny 2 now?

Agree on how good they sound live. Must spend ages sound checking as they get it spot on every time.

There are some new releases this week. We get albums from NOFX, RM, White Lung, Nyx Nott, Leftfield, Sophie Jamieson, Micah P Hinson, Terence Fixmer and Black Ox Orkestar.
Quiet week this week (and probably for the rest of the year).

I’m going to do what I always do - get very excited for a new NOFX album, then complain that it’s rubbish and they haven’t been any good for almost 20 years!

I thought that Steve Lacy’s album sounded quite similar, in particular I could draw parallels between Hold Me Down and Bad Habit by Lacy.

Bad Habit by coincident is my song of the year, but I wasn’t totally blown away by his record.
Just realised who that Steve lacy is. The bairn(14) and his mates have been listening to him for a while. He is massive with the younguns apparently. That bad habit is brilliant like.

Steve Lacy hates every single thing about one small part of his song going viral on Tik Tok and the fans he's got from it, don't really blame him either.

Thanks to those of you who mentioned Jockstrap in your lists. Was away when it got released and completely passed me by, it’s excellent.
