Northern trains

The price is the same onboard, however your supposed to have a “Promise to Pay” Ticket (from one of the platform machines) or you can be fined for boarding a train without a Ticket! (don’t think the Conductor can fine you, it has to be by a patrolling Revenue Officer).

You can only use a Promise to Pay with Northern if you have no debit/credit card and there's no ticket office open otherwise you'd be fined.

With our conductors they'll ask you to buy a ticket (if you're honest and pleasant they'll charge you what it would have been pre-boarding and if you're a dickhead to them they'll charge the full fare)

Northern is slightly different as they operate a penalty fare system but again not sure how that would work as it's generally only collected at a Northern ran station and LNER at Newcastle tend to just open the gates on busy days.

Is the price more to buy on board and could you be fined?
You can’t buy on board and it’s an automatic fine if you’re caught iirc

From the northern website

If a passenger gets on a train without a ticket or Promise to Pay notice at a station where ticket buying facilities are available, they may be liable to pay a penalty fare. The penalty is the greater of £20 or twice the full single from the station where they got on the train to the next station at which the train stops. If the passenger wants to travel beyond the next station they must also pay the relevant fare from that station to their final destination.
Or surely just buy a ticket on your smart phone if you see one of the train feds coming?
They get you as you won’t be able to buy one from the last station. It will have to be the next one

Tbf I’ve only ever once see them enforce a fine and it was a right charver who was verbally abusing the guard. I frequently get on the train without a ticket for the simple reasons that the service is so poor that A. It could be cancelled on a whim and B. It may be that crowded I do not get on.

Another example of their wonderful customer service. I purchased some tickets on Saturday to travel for the Luton game this weekend and their customer service advisor printed the tickets off and then said “oh the computer has printed the tickets off with the wrong date on you’ll have to sort it out with the train guard on your journey”.

Various communication back and forwards and eventually I got the below response.

Hi ,

Thanks for your email.

Firstly I would like to apologise for not calling you back yesterday, this was a complete oversight on my end and I do take full responsibility for it. This was only due to being very busy in back to back meetings however that is not your issue and should not be excused. My manager is also aware of the issue as this was brought up yesterday.

I have attached the call you have requested as per GDPR.

In relation to the issue I have also spoken to a colleague who you spoke to today aswell as my colleagues message to me yesterday and the only thing we can physically do at the moment would be to get you refunded fully for the incorrect tickets at £32.20 and I will round this up to £50 to cover your travel expenses should you wish to travel to Sunderland again however the best course of action I would suggest would be to purchase the tickets online either through Trainline or ourselves so you do not have to travel to Sunderland and risking them closing the office when you get there.

I hope this will go someway in restoring your faith in Northern and if there is anything else, please dont hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards,
Northern Rail

Computers do what they're told, more like they've sold you tickets for the wrong day by putting the wrong date through. Then instead of refunding there and then they've ducked the responsibility and made it your problem.

Yep, Once got on at Hartlepool didn't' have time to get ticket and was given at ticket barrier a promise to pay chitty, which basically mean you have to pay on the train if asked and if you don't you are banged to rights.

Anyone struggling for Cardiff? I've got a 12 seat bus organised from Billingham but the more the merrier as it's cheaper for everyone, happy to bump it to a 16 seater. PM if anyone may fancy it

There's already a bigger bus that runs from Billingham every home game. £10 a man I believe.

We're on a bus from Billingham for Boxing day mate. Want me to see if there's any room left? It's a 50 odd seater. Let me know how many seats you need and i'll have a check.

Not quite, if the ticket office is closed (or there isn’t one) and you want to pay with cash but the machine only accepts cards, you are perfectly entitled to buy on board on the basis that there were no facilities to buy a ticket at the station with your preferred payment method. They might try and penalty fare you but they’d be in the wrong. You are not obligated to use a card only TVM if that is the only facility available, nor are you obligated to buy online using an app.

South West trains are not much better. I travelled from London Paddington to Exeter St Davids, I had to go on to Exmouth, so got on the train to Exmouth. Asked the ticket bloke for a ticket to Exmouth while on the train, he looked very upset, "How did you get in the station?" "I got off the train from London Paddington", "Why didnt you buy a ticket?" "Going to the ticket machine would have meant I would have had to go through the barriers to leave the station to come back in" "I will let you off this time, but I could have fined you" WTAF :)
