The Safety of Fans in the North Stand

Not sure mate but can't harm to bring it up. If it's impossible for some reason (god knows why it should be in this day and age) then we should at least get a decent official explanation for it. Sadly they get complaints constantly about it, including from people in local government from what I remember, and haven't done anything so I doubt the club asking will have any effect. Completely agree that they should be adding their voice to it though, will request that it's mentioned

Wont do any harm!

Out of interest, we're you around in the days when away support was in the SS?

If we can move the away support, which is a far greater security/policing operation that moving 'family' support then I'd welcome it.

Anyone tell me why this change.was made? I.e was the Police having to many issues with the original design of the ground to implement such a change?
ES got sick of going to games and seeing our fans stuck away in corners far from the pitchside.

It’ll be coppers up there i’d wager. They’ve shown total resistance to putting a net up which could have been done ages ago and you can’t just shift them to the lower bowl without displacing thousands of SC holders and the logistics that go with it.

Imagine the state of the ticket office thread ffs

@DonaldDownTheWing what time is the meeting tomorrow mate? @Guinness Guzzler are the RAWA going as well?
Not sure on the time, just heard its tomorrow PM. Some of the committee members will be present. I've passed on the main comments from this thread and said that they really need to communicate what their plans are because people are losing patience with the issue seemingly being kicked down the road whilst fans risk getting hurt every time they go to the match.

They’re 2/3 forrin mega rich marra. They probably don’t think UK H&S applies to them.
They may be rich but aspects of this failure could provoke criminal prosecution depending on the attitude the authorities took.

“Forrin” or not, it is not much fun being interviewed under caution - and so I trust someone has explained this to Board members and senior staff who are party to current decisions.

How do you know that?
What has the council said? You may find that it’s them that don’t want the net
Hes emailed fans saying he's recommended netting but nobody wants to pay for it.

It's in this thread I think at the beginning.

Have you been up there? It’s freezing cold in winter ffs

This ‘put them where they were designed to be’ argument is finished, it’s how they are dealt now, and they certainly won’t be going back to the south stand.
I think this argument is far from over.

It would require the least changes in procedures and would be met with approval from the police who operated in this way for years.

It will also improve the atmosphere in the stadium as the fans react to each other.

It is the safest, most cost effective option for the club and both sets of fans.

i think it would be met with resistance from police if the reports of trouble reducing by 60% since the move are true

in their eyes it may have been manageable in the old arrangement, but the new arrangement may be significantly easier to police and overall arrest figures are down, so it wouldn't be wise for them to accept changing it

also, the atmosphere improving is totally subjective and open to interpretation, so passing off your opinion as 'fact' just bluster. i think it would effect the atmosphere for sunderland fans in negative way

On Saturday most of the away turnstiles were closed behind the centre North Stand, and they were funnelling them into what looked to be only 4 gates. This was causing a more hostile atmosphere on the walkway outside with SAFC fans trying to get into the North Lower.

@Guinness Guzzler Can you find out why this happened on Saturday?

So before the game the hostility was already ramped up and then inside the ground when we've scored the 2nd missiles again thrown into the North Lower.

Don't forget a glass bottle and smoke canister were thrown at the Coventry match and someone could have been seriously injured or worse.
