Squad announced for Pakistan test series

Whats happened to the sikh off spinner at Surrey?
He was absolutely class for two years, then fell out with Stewy in 2020 over fitness.

I think it's a few things -

Firstly, I think he's a victim of the schedule. He's a very one-dimensional cricketer - he bowls wicket taking balls. That's it. He can't bowl long, economical, containing spells, he doesn't know which end of a bat to hold, and his fielding is poor. He doesnt have the mystery nor the variations for white ball, so is almost solely a red ball player. The problem is, with so much red ball cricket shunted into the spring and autumn, you need your spinner to do more - to be able to bowl long spells keeping batsmen quiet, but also you want them to be more dimensional and have more strings to their bow. There's no point picking an offy who could take a cluster of wickets on a green pitch on a cold September morning, when you could have someone else who might not be as threatening but can bowl the overs, add something to the batting and hopefully chip in with a wicket while the seamers do the donkey work. It's why Moriatti has leapfrogged him, and why we've invested so much in Will Jacks' offies.

He's also had (unconfirmed I might add!) rumours of "indiscipline", and has had Stewy tear into him in the past about his poor fitness. I think Stewy thought he was taking it easy - not working on his weaker assets, just expecting to turn up on the day and rip through sides - and needed a kick up the arse. The problem was while he was taking that kick up the arse, Moriatti developed and became a good bowler, and they've seen something in Jacks' bowling they really like. So he's been pushed down the pecking order, by others who are outperforming. And with the pace attack we have, it's seen as more important to have someone who can bat and hold down an end so the quicks can rotate, than play Virds.

He still has shit tons of potential, but we loaned him to Somerset for a game towards the end of the season where his figures were 0 for 100-odd.

He's still really well liked at the Oval, however, and young enough to come back again if he's willing to put the work in. He's definitely talented.
I know the game's different but Parkinson hasn't looked that great in ODIs, always been a suspicion he's too slow to challenge international players. Add that to the fact that he's a rubbish bat and a dodgy fielder I can see why they're banking on Root and one of Jacks and Livingstone to be the support to Leach. It still surprises me, also suggests Bess has fallen by the wayside.
Blimey, I forgot Bess even existed!
Bit of a slight on him like

Bess is the worst off spinner I've ever seen play for England.
Kept getting wickets with tripe....still better than Kerrigan when it comes to England Spinners

On Virdi, he needs to make sure he's playing some first class or good standard cricket throughout leading into next season.
Also needs to sound out some other clubs by the looks of things, you know Durham could probably do with a wicket taking spinner...

I'll rephrase that to worst England spinner that consistently got gametime.

Mark Wood is one of our most important cricketers especially away from home
Mmmm, one of? Yea, I can accept that, but he's in third position in the quick bowler stakes after Anderson and Broad, he bowls fast but he doesn't take wickets like a those two - and that means he's vulnerable to an up and coming bowler in my view.

You could say that Wood and Archer deserve a place because they have express pace and therefore are a bit different, and variety is a good thing. Still think Potts should be in the squad though.

Rehan Ahmed iirc.

Thought Stone might have travelled to rotate in for 1 test for Wood tbf.

Who?
18 year old Leicestershire leg spinner, got Stokes and Cook out in the nets at Lords as an 11 year old. Going to Abu Dhabi with the Lions and then expected to be retained for the Pakistan Tests, apparently. Seems to be highly rated and would be our youngest ever Test cricketer if he plays.

He was superb in the under 19s world cup run to the final. He's been used well by Leicestershire this season and given the chance to flourish without a lot of pressure. Don't think you can just blag a first class century at 18 if you can't handle yourself with a bat either.

He was on a £50k contract in the 16.4 for the southern fries apparently. Not bad work for an 18 yr old, if you can get it. His 14 yr old brother Farhan is supposedly decent too.

I’m very excited about this kid. Fair play to him for staying at Leicestershire too, I’d half expected him to have upped and left for Notts by now.
