Squad announced for Pakistan test series

They clearly see Jacks as someone they can turn into an all-rounder, similar to Moeen who took up spin quite late. Although he was essentially Surrey's lead spinner in the county championship this year in terms of overs and wickets, his 2022 record of 17 wickets @ 47 isn't good enough to warrant a call up to play the 2nd spinner role in Pakistan

It's harsh on Lees but great for Durham I'll be chuffed to have him back in all formats next year. Same with Potts, seems mad not to take him.

Livingstone is a nailed on pick..... six years ago. Was the best number 3 in county cricket for two seasons but since being overlooked he's gradually morphed into a white ball hitter. Seems a strange time to give him a debut.

They obviously see Root as the second spinner, which seems optimistic.

Shocking to leave Potts at home.

Livingstone getting a call up really shows the value of scoring runs in the county championship...

Parkinson getting left out is a little surprising.

Duckett or jennings to open with Crawley then. (Though I'd like both to play with Brook but wont happen)

Think Jack's will play as the 2nd spinner/all rounder

I'm surprised to see Woody and not Potts, Potts is a wicket taker and for all his pace Woody isn't much.

Nobody can tell me that Crawley’s performances were deserving of one. Whilst Lees didn’t set the world alight, he did no worse than Crawley. I’d argue he showed far more maturity and ten times the willingness to do what the team needed over Crawley.

*Provided the Yorkshire rumours aren’t true!

Crawley averaged 31.5, Lees 19.2 in the series v South Africa, so it's fairly obvious who is the better selection.

Lees might show some grit, but unfortunately he's found wanting at Test Match level.

There are no openers worthy of a Test place in comparison to previous years.

Strange squad! Not a specialist off spinner or leggy thought good enough to even tour.
Personally I think it just shows how bad they must rate the back up spinners in this country.

And they have just decided rather than pick bad spinners who can’t bat, might as well pick bad spinners who can.

I agree, bit like above with the spinner if we had opening alternatives Crawley and Lees would both not be picked, however if we just picking one other opener to go with Jennings, then it’s a toss up between Lees and Crawley and not a disgrace as some has suggested Lees been dropped.

Extremely harsh on Potts though imo

Potts would have actually been a threat on the flat wickets over there and would have been great experience for future overseas tours for him

Also with Parkinson’s omission has he been written off based on one test at Lords that he was never meant to be even playing in?

I thought Livingston was mainly a slogger?
He averaged 7 in 2021 championship. Don't think he played in the 2022 one.

So he's got loads of runs behind him in the red ball format
Livingstone did not play any red ball cricket for Lancashire this season.
How can you select someone for a TEST series who did not score a single red ball run this summer ?
He also averaged 7 in 2021. From 7 matches if memory serves as well.

77 runs at 11 for him in 2021 having checked into it. Saqib Mahmood averaged 10.42 with 73 runs for a comparison.

I know the game's different but Parkinson hasn't looked that great in ODIs, always been a suspicion he's too slow to challenge international players. Add that to the fact that he's a rubbish bat and a dodgy fielder I can see why they're banking on Root and one of Jacks and Livingstone to be the support to Leach. It still surprises me, also suggests Bess has fallen by the wayside.

What about the summer? We played more than just one series against SA this summer.

while I love seeing Matty Potts playing for England, given their track record on running bowlers into the ground, I'm not averse to him having a few months off. He'll come back even stronger next year.

Bess is the worst off spinner I've ever seen play for England.
