Your timing will improve and you will learn how to play with a drummer.

You should get a Fender jazz bass. Don’t look at others just get the best Jazz you can afford.

For all its simplicity, Psycho Killer by Talking Heads has an iconic baseline.

Also The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. Some definitely worthwhile baselines to learn.

Is there much difference between a jazz and precision bass?

Yes the neck on the Jazz bass is thinner than a Precision Bass so it's more comfortable to play, plus the body shape/pick ups are different. Both versatile basses but I've always preferred the look, feel and tone of the Jazz bass.
