Is there any point learning the bass guitar?

One of the joys of being a bass player is playing the melody behind the main melody. It really is pleasurable, and I feel a bit sorry for people who can't appreciate it.

In rock music there's two kinds of bass player. Those who prefer to stick to the root notes and there are those who want to make it more interesting. At their best (The Ox) each bass part almost becomes a bass solo in its own right, and I hate bass solos, but some bass lines are utterly beautiful. I'm pleased that I was competent on the instrument.

Four pages and no-one has mentioned Peter Hook, one the best around imo. Class for New Order and they miss him badly imo.

One of the most important parts of a band imo, without them most decent songs would sound crap.
