NUFC/Sportswashing - Summer 2022

The saudis can’t really get any worse. So we have the option to either a) stop supporting the club we have done our whole life b) try and separate the two things, and accept that as a result we’re compromised c) whole heartedly embrace it and start wearing Saudi flags and tea towels on our heads.

The vast majority have gone for b. I respect those who have gone for a, but I couldn’t do that. I’ve thought about it a lot. Those who choose c are obviously idiots. There are some in b who use whatabouttery etc, and they are closer to c. There is no defending the saudis.

I think Erikson will end up at one of the big 6 tbh.

Oh I see what you mean. I’d not drop burn. He’s the best defender at the club that I know

I don’t think Almiron is surplus to requirements but his agent is angling him for a move. I’d love him to stay but if he wants to move to get more game time I respect that. I think most fans would feel the same. He’s a bit of a fan’s favourite precisely because of his work ethic.

Well those people are idiots anyway. There’s no saving some people.

(I am talking about the posters - not those executed!)
Think you missed exploring a further option if you take at face value that fans can’t control/influence who buys their club and the awful position it can put people in in terms of potentially walking away from the club they have supported all their life

keep following the club you have always followed but make it clear to the new owners at every available opportunity that you do not welcome them, want them owning your club and actively keep that line of approach going (social media, matches, local politicians etc)

It was apparently the done thing when Ashley was in charge so clearly you have history for such an approach

OK how about

21/22 season - £26m (net)
20/21 season - £35m (net)
In the seasons under Ashley, our average net spend (I know, I know, LOL-tastic, right?) is £9.5m. Bit of context, in the 10 seasons you were in the top flight while we were owned by Ashley, yours was £8.5m.

Brighton's 5 seasons in the top flight have seen them spend, on average, £10m. Leicester £14m. I bring up these two in particular because within the years Newcastle were owned by Ashley, they've come from League 1 and financial ruin all the way into (and in Leicester's case winning) the Premier League. Brighton are respected for the way they've shown ambition on and off the pitch, as have Leicester.

West Ham and Aston Villa have spent more than twice our net spend in their ambition.

Ashley's NUFC have done nothing. We didn't even properly fund the women's team ffs.

You can cherry pick the unusual splurge in the window and avoid any context that explains it, in an effort to paint Newcastle fans as 'dalewded jawdees 6inarow, FTM' if you like, but it just makes you look really silly.

Probably because you were in loads of debt and he wanted to get you out of it and self sufficient.

Saved ya club.. without Ashley you never would have had the Saudis.

Spot on ^ however they see a chance of silverware so don’t want to rock this boat just yet

So hiding well and truly behind an ownership fudge to justify supporting a club funded by an obscene regime. On field success > any atrocities.
So despite what you know nothing they can do would make you say ‘not at my club’ as long as they fund your ‘ownership’
Moral vacuum
I suppose so. Although I disagree about being a moral vacuum. And most fans would be the same.

I don't think someone who claims there were over 10,000 Newcastle fans with tea towels on their head when the takeover broke cares about looking silly.

I missed that post and think it’s a good one.
This is a prime example of sportswashing. The mental gymnastics are astounding. First he tells us he has wrestled with his conscience about what the Saudis have done, now he is denying they own the club! A classic case of sportswashing.
Tell me what sports washing is

Net spend klaxon.

Remember when he saved you from financial meltdown?

I bet he wish he didn’t bother now.

Great post. Probably somewhere between a and b.

I missed that post and think it’s a good one.

A state using sport to enhance its reputation. Maybe my description is wrong. Brainwashed I dunno. But there is something wrong with you when you start to deny the saudi state has nothing to do with you. Deluded, downright crazy. Dunno
