Wear-Tees Derby

It is a Derby to me. No way near the scale of Newcastle obviously but it will be the biggest game of the season for both, home and away (excluding potential play off/deciding games at the end of the season)

Unlike many years ago, Boro take a good and vocal following with them these days too. I think they had the best away crowd in the Championship last year. Sets it up for a good atmosphere etc.

The game at the SOL years back (3.2) when Murphy scored was a cracker.

It used to be a derby/ big and well attended game until they went down and subsequently have beaten us on every bar 1 occasion since :)... that said, I wouldn't hide me face for a month after a beating like I would if playing the mags, so perhaps that determines the weight of it

Playing devils advocate is Middlesbrough v Newcastle a derby?
Would suggest that it is. As is Sunderland v Middlesbrough. And Sunderland v Newcastle. All are North east Derbies, of varying intensity.

Don’t know whether Mag supporters protest as strongly as some of Sunderland’s support that a game for them vs the Boro is “not a derby”.
Incorrect it's 35 f***ing mile away man

Is Preston v Liverpool a Derby ??
Is Man Utd v Sheff Wed a Derby??

Before anyone says it Liverpool Man U is not a Derby

A derby is a game against your nearest rivals whether that be same city / town or not.
On that logic:

Wolves v West Brom
Forest v Derby
West Ham v Millwall

are not derby games.

Until the government created the ITV network and divided the country up to include "Tyne-Tees", most people in the northern counties of Northumberland and County Durham had little interest in a small trophyless club. Once on the TV as a 'region' every night it is easy to see why the 'regions' big three had a form of rivalry. These days we don't define our lives anymore by one chanelll of one media and current generations no longer have any interests in rivalries with someone away down the coast in North Yorkshire. Different for Boro of course who need to find a rival!!

I don't hate them, don't even hope they get beat if I see their results but it's a game with more on it than the average game and I'm sure the atmosphere will be better than a game v Luton/QPR etc.

I feel sorry for boro. The place is a hellhole the police force failed and private security firms drive around the streets telling people to put clothes on and to stop sleeping on the pavements.

I've no real feeling on Boro, the only players I know are the ones that used to play for us, I've no idea where they finished in the league, I don't hear any gossip as I would from mates who are mags because none of them are Boro fans.....Steve Gibson seems like an alright bloke for an owner mind, but that's my thought about Boro.

Not arsed.

Our older supporters probably 65 + see it as a Derby . Few younger than that have any hatred for Sunderland. If anything they feel a bit sorry for you with 2 relegation and 4 years in Div 3.
Leeds are hated and to some extent the mags.
Luckily our players seem to think it's a Derby when we play you and get well stuck in.
