The Fishing Thread

That’s the thing though. People who don’t own a boat don’t blank. Because they go out in the height of the season when the fishing is easy. If you do it as a hobby all year around things get a bit more difficult.
Everyone as good electronics nowadays.

If I went rock fishing 3 times next year I wouldn’t blank. But I blanked regular when I was fishing 3 matches a week at marsden.

I was a top shore angler regularly featuring in the sea anglers magazine and winning comps around the country but blanked more than I caught, spent 10 times more than I ever won. It’s a mugs game :lol:
I was never that good mate. And we used to only go out if the weather was perfect. He has just sold his boat for more than he paid for it and he has now bought a small inflatable and engine. Not sure what plans he will have for fishing this summer.

Just had a text from my mate who lives in Sandhead, on Luce bay. He had a 9lb 3oz Bass out from one of his marks last week on bait, won't fish lures for them.

It was returned for me going up in a months time for a week, with my plugs and soft baits 🎣🎣
Went down the holderness to try for hounds last night

Long story short. The hounds werent there. The weed was. Fuck sake 🤣

Terrible down there when the weeds about.

Aye the boat prices are crazy at the minute. I’m glad I left the comps behind tbh. I enjoy my fishing more. It became a full time job. Looking after bait was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.

It was shite. We started at out newton but the weed was horrendous.

Move to east newton about 15 mile north. Still horrendous.

Nevermind. Way it goes eh

With you on that. Fished the match scene from the early 80's up until the mid 90s and that was the hardest thing about it. Getting crab to the perfect state for a match was a nightmare, constantly looking after them. Then there was the time involved collecting your bait - your weekend was written off in the the winter, we used to travel to Berwick early on a Saturday morning to get runnidown and that was you knackered for the rest of the day. Loved it all though, but I really couldn't be chewed now. Give me my plugs and jellies for the bass any day now.

I got into the bass fishing after shore fishing but once again I couldn’t be bothered with the travel. With the boat fishing it’s 10 mins along the road out back in and home. Everything is left on the boat and all the bait if needed is frozen. But I did enjoy shore fishing.

I still remember the mid 1980's when whitby boats were doing the ton on wreck cod and ling in a day, around that time there was a decent wrecking boat out of Sunderland, skipper was called Arthur, used to take us out to a mark called the graveyard? One of my old schoolmates, think he might still live in Pennywell Willie R still has a boat, takes angling parties out.

I went out on the Nobles from amble in the 80s.we had 2000lb of fish that day, nothing bigger than 10lb and that was on the reefs. I had 20 stone of fish myself. Horrid to think of it now, but that was the way it was.

We made our own

Length of chrome bathroom tube cut to length then bashed shut one end

Fill with molten lead. Drill a hole in bottom for split ring and geet big treble hook. Repeat at the top and then hit the body with a planishing hammer for a bit effect.
Jeffers, I was a skint kid, I didn't buy mine from Coast and country or bagnall and kirkwoods, I nicked the lead and I didn't even have a hammer planishing or claw, your just so posh 🔨🙄

Been making paste up this Morning in readiness for the glorious 16th of June.
Only knows where I will get sufficient time to fish.

6 eggs, base powder, flavouring, boil for 1 minute and cool down.

Made two lots - 250 pieces cut up and in the freezer.

Unfortunately my favourite Barbel and Chub stretch ruined by a hydroelectric plant upstream that has reduced the flow over the gravel and bastard otters.

Tight lines.

I’m a fly angler so I am biased.

I respect the coarse guys, but for me, fly is the way.

salmon
sea trout
brownies
rainbows

oops and the lady grayling

which I have had on one occasion only.

Good luck to your boy and let’s hope he is a future fly fishing star.

He’s a proper little fishing snob with waist coat and flat cap, only does barbless hooks and catch and release. I’m trying to convince him to come on a boat trip with me and some mates with their kids but so far he’s not having it.

This time next week is the start of 2 weeks Trout fishing for me in Sutherland,
We are staying alongside Loch Shin and have fishing on some brilliant Lochs, most of the lochs we fish are included in the cost of the estate cottage and others are so remote nobody will be asking about permits I'll try and post some photos while we are away.
Last month we were in Brora, a days boat fishing for Salmon, Trout and Seatrout £25, My pal had a 6lb Brownie this year, he and his brother took the biggest Salmon and Seatrout last season on Brora, we have a boat already booked again.
Golspie angling club Season ticket is only £20, they have boats on a couple of high Hill lochs, and members pay £5 a day for a boat.
I can't wait.

I was lying - I had one of paters' chaps knock them up in the workshops after they had finished their chores.
I figured as much jeffers, some of us summed it as kids and didn't have an SR6 gated community upbringing 🙄 back to fishing, Cabela's and Bass Pro have a big fathers-day sale on next weekend.
