You're going to be the minority there. He is an outstanding talent.

From my listening recently:
Warpaint - good, the opening track in particular is fantastic
Tomberlin - very good, hasn't heard anything prior to this record so I'll have to dive into the debut soon
Sharon van Etten - only had one listen but it sounded exactly like what you'd expect from a SVE record
Let's Eat Grandma - officially the worst band name in history and they must regret that quite a lot (seriously). This is a belting album though, mind I've played it so much I'd gladly not hear it again for a year
Daniel Rossen - meh
Fontaines DC - meh, again.
Arcade Fire - I think this is a real return to form. Strongly recommend to those who may have lost interest or wrote them off after the last two attempts
Astrel K - already mentioned this on here but I'm still playing this one, think it's great. Singer from Ulrika Spacek doing his own thing.

Got Morby and the Smile lined up to listen to this morning. A great way to start any weekend.

Hip Hop’s the biggest genre in the world these days and Kendrick’s probably the best songwriter of the 21st century and one of the finest musicians of that genre of all time.

Can’t be that much of a surprise!

That's depressing to think comparitive to genuine talent such as guru and premier, big l, KOOL g rap and hundreds of others who made great music.

I'm never really surprised that the modern hype machine and recency bias makes new mainstream music record breakingly popular, it's just miserable that people old enough to know better get sucked into it.
 
I am enjoying When You Walk Away by Fur which came out late last year.

Stella Donnelly has a new song out which is good and new album in August. She is supporting Rolling Blackouts CF on their tour soon.
 
My weekly review. It's a week that's high on quality but low on numbers (compared to some recent weeks):

The Smile: already discussed at length. A likely album of the year contender.
Kevin Morby: a very good album indeed. He's consistently excellent.
Whitney K: a mini-album/EP (I've seen it described as both) from one of Canada's top new artists. A bit Bill Callahan, a bit Lou Reed. Lovely!
Kendrick Lamar: I'm not finding this as immediately engaging as either To Pimp a Butterly or Damn. There are some stunning tunes on it though, particularly in the second half of the album.
Gentle Sinners: the frontmen from two of Scotland's top turns combine. Aidan Moffat is definitely to the fore. It's excellent. In most other weeks, like Morbo, this would be in contention for AotW.
The Black Keys: pretty good, I guess. Some good, fun songs on this.
Monophonics: psychedelic soul. Enjoyable, they're good at this stuff. Compact (37 minutes).
Ye Vagabonds: second album from the highly promising Irish folkies. They're a lot more traditional than, say, Lankum, who tend to push the boundaries. Warming.
Obongjayar: a London based Nigerian who mixes Afrobeat and hiphop to winning effect. Debut album, I believe, although he has featured on tracks by Little Simz, Danny Brown, King Krule, Moses Boyd and RIchard Russell. It's a very good debut, anyway.

Album of the week: The Smile basically.
 
Florence and the machine dropped there new lp Friday. Stand out tracks for me free and girls against God. I saw her play them both live at city hall and free standa out as a quality gig song.

Going to give Kendrick another listen but I’m really not sure about his new one. Feels like his albums are dipping in quality since TPAB (understandably, to be fair).

Yes I’ve had it on twice so far and not been taken with it. I love his work but really don’t get the acclaim for this one yet.

Tickets just gone on sale for the Arena in November, so my lad tells me. He seems quite excited.

Wonder what Kendrick will make of wor flags?

To Pimp a Butterfly is one of the greatest albums ever made in my opinion. Would be interested as to why you reckon he’s so overrated? He’s leagues ahead of any other rapper still making music today like.

well it's pretty self explanatory - i don't think his music is particularly good. if you (and so many others) didn't think he was great then he couldn't be overrated.

i just think his voice is irritating, he doesn't really have a flow as often doesn't bother rhyming stuff, half talks half whines and the stuff i've heard of his doesn't really have particularly interesting or meaningful lyrics.

obviously ALL of the above is subjective, i get that. and maybe alot of his other work is great, but i don't bother searching it out as what i've heard i find really unejoyable to listen to, and everyone fawns over it which suggests it isn't any different from his stuff with lesser air time.

just find it really surprising like

I’ve always struggled to get into him too. TPAB was good, without it being as outstanding as everyone else seems to think, and I just couldn’t get into “Damn” at all. Never really given his earlier stuff a go though.
