Right. So lager zone was fun.

Let’s maybe get back to the thread.

Thinking through the sanctions a bit more, some random thoughts

- financial sanctions - swift, oil companies, banks etc…they hit the big guys. But most of their cash is offshore
- then there is the trickle down effect. MOEX is on its arse, rouble is worth nothing, they start to hit the middle class
- Netflix, Disney, football - they start to hit the ordinary Russians

This isn’t Iran or NK. It’s been largely international for decades. You can’t suddenly turn off all of the taps that people have know. And not expect a response. Propaganda only works so long
I think certainly Germanys sanctions are being overblown due to the energy situation.

The financial sector sanctions will hurt them, but the key to really crippling sanctions against Russia Is the energy sector. So far the sanctions have left the Russian energy sector largely untouched.
Agree on terms of impact. But the banking sanctions will start to make it very difficult

I note that the Russian state are now C- with S&P

The ordinary Russians form most of the armed forces/police. I wonder how long they will support the regime.

These people weren’t born into this situation. Back in the day, the belief in the system, a little bit more power than the average worker and a bit extra vodka was enough to keep those doing the policing/soldiering going.

Will that suffice now? People are going back to pre-internet days. Giving them some extra black bread isn’t going to fill the gap that Netflix has left.

Germany surely can't put in any meaningful bank sanctions?
Doesn’t really matter. The international banks are all too scared of not meeting US sanctions, the DOJ has wide reaching powers (rightly or wrongly). No German bank will touch Russian crude (I haven’t looked at what is exempt or not right now, but if the US tighten then no international bank can do anything)

Ps well done for being the sensible one this evening

I’m grateful for this thread. I’ve been glued to it all week at work anxiously, people posting twitter links and videos, yous have got me the good stuff. I can’t find all that on twitter as easily as yous have. God bless the Ukrainians, inspirational. I’m off to Prague in 2 weeks all going well. Ill
Certainly be joining in the gathering between bars if it’s actually as easy as that. May this all be over sooner though I hope. The Russian bully bastards are getting chinned. Hopefully our Ukrainian heroes stay safe. 🙏

Don't forget, he still has the massive revenues from oil and gas, which are usually paid for in dollars, I think.

However, I desperately hope you are right and the sanctions change his course.

I'm not sure how massive these revenues are, but he'll have to choose between spending them on his own desperate countrymen to avoid being overthrown, or invading other countries. He can't do both.

We're doing the right thing in my opinion by arming the Ukrainians to carry on their fight against his army, while tightening the financial noose around his neck back home. He won't have the money or the manpower to get up to mischief in other countries.

A friend of mine has a Russian wife (they live in Brussels) and they travelled extensively in India for 3 months. He's fluent in Russian and quickly decided he'd be better off pretending to be a Russian national as he'd never encountered such anti-British sentiment as in India. Russians receive a warm welcome there. History.
I spent a year living in India and travelled to probably 10 different states and I didn’t experience a single anti-British sentiment personally even at museums covering British atrocities like this fella . I’d even go so far saying people treated me with extra kindness because I was British

Agreed, unfortunately it’s going to take time that thousands of people won’t have but hopefully sanctions leads to a big uprising in “the motherland” in the next 3-4 weeks

Strangely this was the same treatment I experienced whilst loving and travelling around Germany.

That is why the uk is getting a body swerve from the international community when it comes to the united approach to Russia. This government, this county, you, me - we’re tainted, we’ve all been bought.

To be absolutely fair we need to see a breakdown of these 'entities' , even just one could be the equivalent of 100.
