I could see him installing a puppet regime in Ukraine and leaving them to it (with full supervision and terror tactics).
The mere fact that he invaded Ukraine must mean that he is motivated by a misguided desire to recreate the USSR.
I can easily see him going for Moldova, then finding an excuse to cut through Lithuania to create a 'corridor' to Kaliningrad.
So just to be clear - you definitely *didn’t* suggest that the government was banning protest in this country - despite saying ( and I quote) that the government “are literally passing legislation to make protesting illegal”?

Just out of curiosity - what is it you don’t think you’re going to be entitled to protest about, and which part of which legislation precludes protest on that issue?
This tends to happen periodically on the thread, when the small clutch of anti-U.K., pseudo-Putin apologists turn up.

A friend of mine has a Russian wife (they live in Brussels) and they travelled extensively in India for 3 months. He's fluent in Russian and quickly decided he'd be better off pretending to be a Russian national as he'd never encountered such anti-British sentiment as in India. Russians receive a warm welcome there. History.

Thinking through the sanctions a bit more, some random thoughts
- financial sanctions - swift, oil companies, banks etc…they hit the big guys. But most of their cash is offshore
- then there is the trickle down effect. MOEX is on its arse, rouble is worth nothing, they start to hit the middle class
- Netflix, Disney, football - they start to hit the ordinary Russians
This isn’t Iran or NK. It’s been largely international for decades. You can’t suddenly turn off all of the taps that people have know. And not expect a response. Propaganda only works so long

Putin needs one thing more than anything else in order to keep invading and occupying countries: money.
He won't have a pot to piss in by the end of this month and will have much bigger problems keeping his own skint population under control, never mind the people in Lithuania, Ukraine, or wherever else he dreams of conquering.
I wonder if Russia will be so keen to support India if their border dispute with China blows up?

The financial sector sanctions will hurt them, but the key to really crippling sanctions against Russia Is the energy sector. So far the sanctions have left the Russian energy sector largely untouched.

Don't forget, he still has the massive revenues from oil and gas, which are usually paid for in dollars, I think.
However, I desperately hope you are right and the sanctions change his course.
