Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

If Putin launched a nuclear strike on the West he'd become a suicide bomber. He's clearly f***ing bonkers but there's no evidence that he has a deathwish.
Any scenario like this is basically end of the world stuff. You only need about 50+ modern sized nukes (100-1000 times bigger than Hiroshima) to go off at the same time to wipe out 80-90% of life on earth out via a nuclear winter...

Sort of like how a comet crash in Mexico killed all the dinosaurs, the dust clouds block out the sun for long enough to fuck us all. Better under the bomb, frankly.

Anyway, any scenario where he nukes a country like Britain clears that threshold, almost certainly.

Where do yous think the safest place in the U.K. will be if he hoyed a cheeky nuke over once he got bored of killing innocent Ukrainians?

in England probably somewhere in a line north-south (roughly) from Forest in Teesdale down to Settle

nice and secluded, miles away from anything important like an airport, power plant, main railway, etc

this is assuming that the ranges around Warcop are just ranges, and not an actual army base - if it is then avoid the A66 (although avoiding the A66 is good advice at all times really)

We're being bombarded at the moment with propaganda stories of Ukrainian heroism, Putin is unhinged, Russia is losing etc but the truth is that Russia is more than capable of getting its own way and killing thousands of people - people seem to have lost sight of that. They've fought this war with kid gloves on so far (relatively speaking).

This whole conflict is completely stupid and will probably end when Ukraine agrees not to join NATO, which is a sensible compromise that could have been reached a long time ago before all this stupidity and loss of life.

If Ukraine wants to join NATO, which is a defensive alliance, then it should be allowed to do so. It’s entirely entitled to do that.

Russia has no jurisdiction over sovereign states and can’t be allowed to continue to think that it does. The pathetic approach of “ooooh we mustn’t upset Russia” has emboldened Putin for a decade. He can fuck off.

He’d be in some bunker in Siberia I guess.

Aye, but if his end goal is more power, getting your country nuked to fuck surely isn't conducive to that no matter how much land mass you've got to personally escape them

A hopefully hypothetical question….it turns out Putin is serious about launching a nuclear missile into the North Sea, the only way he worn do it is if Ukraine surrender….what’s everyone’s stance on that? Urge Ukraine to surrender or keep on fighting and go nuclear?
Got no choice now, we can’t be threatened with nuclear annihilation every time he doesn’t get his way. Keep on fighting.

I would reply with, well in that case get the fuck out of Ukraine or we will go nuclear.

We can't just tell another country to surrender to save some fish in the North Sea.

If and when this sorry mess is over and Russia achieve some kind of regime change there needs to be a commitment made by all nations for nuclear disarmament. I think the impact of economic sanctions could become the weapon of choice in a better world.

For the record, I know this will never happen.
if the powers behind the throne in Russia have any sense at all - they will put in train a sequence of events to take Putin out for good

Hes too old / evil / old-school to get it - but his plan whatever it is is just not going to work

So he puts in place a puppet President ?

I'd give him a week before the gates are stormed and he's out on his ear

Ukrainians are proud fierce people - they've had a taste of freedom away from Soviet era control- there is no way any new regime will stick

If Putin has designs on a new USSR then he's even crazier than he looks

Europe has announced big new arms spending - 4x Russia spending in future

we're going to need it to keep this crackpot in check

Having said that Russia will now be in a depression for years (.Unless... Putin goes )

- their military spend cannot keep pace. This is a country with the GDP of Italy ( actually falling far below Italy as we speak )

There are also a big middle class in Russia now who enjoy holidaying abroad - they're not going to accept another iron curtain

Depends if you think that small, fairly irrelevant countries (sorry Ukraine) should be allowed to do what they like regardless of external factors. If it comes down to WW3 or Ukraine agrees not to join NATO than anyone with a brain would insist on the latter.
