Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Discussing politics on the politics forum. What next?

It’s relevant to what’s going on. Don’t like it? Take yourself somewhere else man.
Talking politics? Give ower man you were talking completely off topic shite within a Ukraine - Russia conflict thread on the Politics forum or should we just merge all the Politics threads into one?

It seems Horatio Pugwash realised it had veered way off topic and just adding nowt to the thread but fluffing it up. He held his hands up yet you are trying to say it hadn't descended into a tit for tat. Just a page prior there were videos of Ukrainians getting bombed to shit and now the breaking news that today's talks have ended. This is more the topic that people on the ReadyToGo forum (not just the strongly politically minded) will want to read about and discuss.

Feel free to reply and justify your posts but I'll leave it at that.

Which is a lovely thought, but we rely on our politicians to do the right thing - which is even more important during a war (or a global pandemic) than it would be in peace time.

That is why it is important that we continue to discuss these issues. Continue to call out the corruption, incompetence and negligence.

Just about to post and saw this update. Do you not realise that a Politics forum for various subjects such as the stuff in red? In fact don't bother replying as like I said I'll leave it at that.

Geopolitics is like tectonic plates, they move here and there over time and can infringe upon each other which causes friction and conflict, the Russian empire has mostly been in recede mode since 1991 and the West has expanded from Germany to Ukraine's border since that time.

What we’re seeing is Russia drawing a line in the sand at Western expansion, it’s that simple really.

Me too, your average Russian everyday.

Got to say , my 'experience' of Russians abroad is not a good one.
Unfriendly, rude, no manners, eat like pigs and very aggressive in drink.
Egypt, Turkey and Dominican were three places where I had poor experiences with them, and Turkish/Egyptian taxi drivers hated them.
Not tarring them all with same brush, but from my own limited experience with them, I can't stand the bassas.

I wonder if Ukraine gave up the two rebel held regions permanently that seem to be less keen to be Ukranian, would Putin take that as a victory, cut his losses (and give up fragile gains) elsewhere and this could be put on the back burner again. NATO decides it doesn't want to expand and we all go back to being bad neighbours.
Issue here is the 2 areas are only 30% actually held by Russian supported troops, as seen by the fact that the Russian army didn't just stroll through the 2 areas with ease, so the Ukrainian government would have to be giving over people who see themselves as Ukrainian, plus id be shocked if the figure wasn't even lower now after what they have seen. The area were predominantly Russian speaking but the Russian backed troops never held the full area.

Also if Ukraine give them the 2 areas what's stopping Putin just going into any country Russia borders with and doing the same and expecting to just chip away parts of each country whenever he likes under the false narrative of they wanted us to do it.

Only way I can see those 2 areas joining Russia would be a full retreat from Russia and a fair vote being given to all the residents of the area prior to this invasion.

Nah, they need a democracy.
And how has democracy gone in the west? How many primeministers have we had that we haven’t elected? Trump did a cracking job didn’t he? People hang onto democracy like it’s a golden f***ing ticket to shangri la, it’s not. In this day and age it’s a tool for corruption, power grabs and controlling the masses. Unfortunately. Like communism, in principle it’s good but can also be manipulated by greed.

Totally agree
But then you go to Russia and they seem ok. A bit miserable but OK.

Maybe if they didn't have such an oppressive state holding them in fear they would be nicer people

Funny how we can say that openly about Russians with out being called racist.
