Yeah that's my thinking, A few posters said he was probably expecting to be welcomed as a liberator by the Ukrainians.

Yes I think he probably did, he's miscalculated everything. Cold, hungry and lost conscripts who'd been lured into battle thinking they were on exercise up against highly motivated, highly trained, cohisive units of combatants who have been trained for this exact scenario by British special forces.

Maybe I'm a bit cynical but I cant believe Putin hasn't worked through all the scenarios, including to where we are now and has already worked out his/our next moves.

The fact that the Invasion of Kiev was so weak/shoddy (so far) makes me think there is something else afoot here.

See how the talks pan out. I've not bought into the idea he wants to rule Ukraine but whatever his motivation, it's going to cost his people an awful lot and accelerate Russia's decline as a global player.

SORRY IF SEB but this thread reminds me of the conflict in Syria. When Kobani was being pounded by ISIS and we had a forum member announce he was going over as a hired hand. Then never posted again. Then popped back up years later with 1 post in a boxing thread anyone else recall that?

In hindsight he was probably just yet another SMB wum who would type or lie about anything on here to get attention but iirc other posters were taking him seriously at the time.

Some of the stuff reminds me of discussions we were having at school when 9/11 happened and we were all shaken up, I was 12 but there was a more nuanced perspective on international politics all the same.

The desperation to be convinced Britain ate somehow involved in the business end of things, while basically shoving under the carpet/throwing hissy fits over the dosmetic British politics which can and actually are affecting victims of the war, *right now* juvenile is a generous word for it tbh.
