Defensive plans that cover the borders of the NATO alliance, Ukraine you're on your own lads and lasses. Good luck. This f***ing stinks

EDIT: Aye he's confirmed that no NATO troops will be entering Ukraine, we've just helped them improve their armed forces

Is it bollocks man. How is it on the West?

Every country that has joined NATO has done so because they want to. They weren’t forced to. Russia doesn’t own those countries. It has no right to tell them what to do.

Stop being an apologist for Putin ffs.
Frij. You are typical of the type of man who if born Russian you would have a different view.

He called Fox last night saying it wouldn't have happened with him in charge

Trump is a narcissistic moron. He was in awe and a sycophant of Putin because he would have loved to have similar power to him in the USA.

Saying it wouldn't have happened with him in charge is like Simon Grayson saying he would be challenging Man City and Liverpool if he hadn't been sacked.

NATO put a foot in Ukraine as a collective force albeit defensively, Russia will use that as an excuse to solidify their argument that the west are attacking Russia
Yep. It's not going to happen. They only way to deal with them is to sanction a sanction proof economy in doing so will do more harm to the ones doing the sanctioning.

They will no doubt end up taking over Ukraine, putting their own guy in power and we will tell them not to do it again.

Rinse and repeat for the next country.

His speech on Monday:

More telling is this piece he wrote last year:
I didn't bother with the Guardian piece, I've seen his speech cherry picked elsewhere

The second link is very informative for understanding the Russian perspective but I don't see how anyone can take from it that he's saying Ukraine is not entitled be an independent state or that he wants to take the former USSR into the Russian Federation, although I'm sure he'd welcome it in the unlikely event they chose to.

He basically explains the history of ethnic and cultural ties in the region, I recognise that could be a dangerous outlook if he was saying he has an entitlement to rule them on that basis but he doesn't. He explicitly accepts Ukraine's right to be independent but asks to know how it will do so. He's clearly blaming the West (the foreigners) for agitating the divisions in the country which he says has led to a rise in Naziism in Ukraine.

The US refuses to accept this of course, it being one of the very few UN members who wouldn't back the resolution to denounce the glorification of Nazis.

Also, we shouldn't forget that Ukraine's democratically elected leader was overthrown in a violent coup, funded by the US and EU. I'm not saying they backed the violence, that started with the Ukraine right wing firing on its own protestors, but the US did have connections with the far right when planning who should take over Ukraine once they removed Yanukovych.
