Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Exactly my thinking too.
I certainly think it is all about his legacy now. Which is even more concerning, if he gets shown up on the battlefield, who knows what his final act will entail. Im sure Russia are sitting on a planet buster of a nuclear bomb "The Tsar Bomb" or something like that.

Hopefully his inner circle bump him off and he goes down in history as Vlad the impaled.

I get vibes of Leningrad where the Russians just equipped anyone with weapons, some even without and were slaughtered by the Germans. Patriotism is a powerful tool but sending out people to die I'm not sure.

Zelensky is an actor/comedian not a politician but you can tell he loves his country, but I'm not sure about the arm everyone you can approach

If it happened here in the UK would you fight?

You have to put yourself in the place of the people of Ukraine

Why not. If we are all nuked to death then we are all dead so impossible to be upset or have regrets.

If we don’t do it and have a world where Russia, China etc can go around invading internationally, interfering with fake news to create unrest around the world, making their populations poorer whilst enriching their leaders etc then its a rubbish world. Better to fix it or end it imo.
If your boiler breaks is your next step to burn the house down?

People aren't against it because of the money. People are against it as they don't want WW3 and nuclear warfare. God bless those children in Kiev but going gung-ho and straight to war and it being our children and family's at risk (especially if China joined in) is not the right answer.

Other than China, the likes of North Korea couldn't piss in a pot as they don't have an army to fight.
But Russia will not stop at Ukraine...we all know that deep down...it will be the smaller ex soviet countries next....Putin is an incredibly dangerous individual ....yes North Korea have nothing but they have a lunatic as a leader .....what's happening today is the very start of some terrifying knock on effects unless something is done .....yet we freeze bank accounts ...

Is it really parallel to Hitler back in the late 1930s?

Did Hitler have to deal with this level of resistance from countries when trying to initially invade & did Hitler face the backlash of the German people like Putin is with the Russian people?

Just trying to get a comparison of the two of them.
Yes, was a lot of unrest at the time, problem was at the start the UK thought Hitler had a point and that Germany was treated badly with the Treaty of Versailles, so we kind of accepted Germany moving back in to the Rhineland, Again Austria didn't set many alarm bells ( People like Churchill, started to become very vocal at this point, at the risks and threats and were wanting us to rearm ) to the masses it was seen the German Austrians just re-joining the Germanic nation, it was when Hitler, started talking about the German parts of Poland and Czech republic, that public opinion was truly split and the bells of war started to ring out, it was our war wariness that swayed the day, we did everything to avoid war and all it day was kick the can down the road a few years, some people thought once the Germans reclaimed what was thought of "there lands" it would end.

Add to the fact the SS sent undercover people into the "German speaking areas" to attack the native German folk living there, "false flag" attacks, it give Hitler more politic power to move in under the guise of protection, within a year of that everyone knew Hitlers true goals and he had made massive gains just by the allies being weak, even when we said attack Poland its war, Hitler himself didn't believe us as we had been so weak and backed down so often.

The people in Germany who resisted Hitler were pretty much removed and it started with the night of the long knifes ( I think thats what it was called ) after that it just wasn't safe to be too vocal about policy in Germany, but quite a few Germans not in the country were very vocal about him and his evil ways, but he also had a lot of support too.

How to respond when one of the biggest, most powerful countries in the world is a gangster state run by thugs is an incredibly difficult question.

To take them on militarily means WW3 and enormous death, destruction, poverty and misery. We'd get all that win or lose, and it's far from clear that we'd win especially if China were to join them, and they would be far less reticent than us to use nukes.

Even meaningful economic action would come at a huge cost to us, given their massive importance when it comes not only to gas but to things like wheat and corn as well.

If Russia do end up getting rid of Putin I hope it’s swift and decisive.

The prospect of this fucker having his hand on the nuclear button if he is facing a prolonged demise is genuinely scary.

Not sure how it ends for Putin but hopefully he doesn’t take millions with him
In his earlier address he threatened the West with what can only be a nuclear attack if we intervein

Is Putin genuinely hell-bent on taking the whole of Ukraine? Or just the eastern sections?
The whole thing. He clearly wants to decapitate Ukraine and install his own men.

And what next? I'm sure if he doesn't consider Ukraine a proper country, then Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are a possible side dish for him.

I realize these are NATO countries and he is less likely to invade them die to the bugger risks of confrontation with NATO.

But who knows what is going on in inside the big lump in his head right now.

If you want an example of an intelligent lunatic, look no further than Vladimir Putin.

I assume this is (very bad) fishing. Not cool or clever mate.

I'm only referring to this forum cos I thought that was what was relevant. Tbf I haven't seen any of the far left lads on here supporting Putin/Russia (although welcome being corrected).

I do agree with your sentiments though regarding war.
That’s fair enough matey in general though it’s madness ive always been central sometimes leaning right but this is about lives and not what side we sit on it’s shameful if people are supporting putin on here.

Can't believe Johnson freezing 3 bank accounts didn't discourage Putin :(

I take it you think that Blocking the servicing of 70% of Russian defence contracts is not going to have any impact on Putin’s ability to keep equipping his forces

Lifted from an article in Guardian

“The sanctioned banks are Rossiya, IS Bank, General Bank, Promsvyazbank and the Black Sea Bank, Johnson said. Promsvyazbank is a top 10 Russian bank, which services 70% of state contracts signed by the Russian ministry of defence.”

If your boiler breaks is your next step to burn the house down?
No. Next step is to fix it. I even used the words ‘fix it’ in the last sentence of my post.

The difference is a boiler can be fixed without any risk of burning down the house. So your analogy doesn’t work. If risking burning down the house was the only way to fix a boiler, then your analogy would be more accurate. And I would take that risk and try and get the boiler fixed.
