Externally, the west needs to be strong on sanctions, but if Putin can portray them as an attack on Mother Russia could there be a hardening of support for him at home? Nevertheless, we need to make Russia and Belarus pariah states and have no dealings with them at all. Over to you Boris.
Internally, I don't know how long resistance within the country can continue (both in will and ability). Looking at Chechnia, that conflict was very bloody and lasted a very long time

After this attack, all the global leaders SHOULD put heavy sanctions and specifically target the wealthy Russian businessmen they've been 'supporting' for the last countless years. Then offer them an agreement to them saying we won't withhold your funds in exchange for calling out Putin and getting all their oligarchy mates to denounce the invasion and put a price on Putin's head.

The last thing Russian gangsters want is for their money to be taken away from them and if they feel this is their best way to keep their money and possibly expand further.

With the Russians also targeting Western Ukraine the risk of a miscalculation is huge. Hit targets in the Baltic’s or Poland accidentally and it will light the blue touch paper

There was the shootings at Ataturk airport a few year back when the Turks accused the Russians of ordering them. They also didn’t think twice about shooting down a Russian military aircraft after it refused to leave Turkish airspace in 2015.

The inherent weakness of democracies is that politicians have to look after their own interests first, which means putting the interests of their voters first. Democracy is clumsy and often frustrating, but I'd rather have that than a supreme leader calling the shots based solely on his own personal whims.

Everyone discussing the 'failings' of 'the West' detracts from the sole cause of this crisis: Putin.
