I hope this thread doesn't roll on for 1000
What's gone is gone.
Welcome Alex Neil.
You're coming into a club where there is a huge bed rock of passionate fans who have suffered so much over decades and have had endured some incredibly poor moments .
You inherit a very uneven squad.
Some really good players but some of them exhausted, some totally disorientated.
Few would envy you but as a managerial test this is up there.
Hope you do well.
He's not gonna read this mate

OK, something obviously happened, but it’s like saying we nearly appointed McCann or Lennon, because we spoke to them. I’m still not convinced he was offered the job.

He did nothing of note at PNE in my eyes, people used Johnsons record at Bristol as a stick to beat him with. Apart from one season, Neil’s record is similar.

Anyway, I’m happy to give him a chance.

The board didn't give him a chance. They sold most of a team from underneath him, and failed to reinvest.

Norwich fan I know said he liked him when he was there but he lost his way a bit, but admitted its a hard job for anyone in the top flight, thinks he'll get us out of this mess and eventually challenging in the championship

Particularly when the owner is happy to spend minimally on a PL squad, get the parachute, rinse and repeat. Same thing is happening this season.

There's no such thing as a "guaranteed promotion candidate". Some might give you a better chance, but nothing in football is ever guaranteed. Some of our fans really are frighteningly dim.
Exactly (on the no such thing point). Will Grigg was pretty much 'guaranteed' to score the goals that would get us promoted. We know what happened there.

I think this is a sensible appointment, if it happens. It might not be as exciting as Keane, but also probably less likely to go horribly wrong. Neil is still a young coach, but he already has a lot of experience given he's only 40.

All I will say is if it is a 18 month contract....shows how much faith our inept leadership have faith in him building a squad. That's shows me the ambition of these muppets

Won't be totally clueless re League One... he's been supporting his mate at Crewe
