New Music Releases Thread

Nell Smith & The Flaming Lips released an album of Nick Cave covers on Friday (only digitally I think). It's way better than I expected. She's a 13 or 14 year old lass (depending on which article you read). Reports mention she followed the Flaming Lips around with her dad and caught Wayne Coyne's attention due to always being dressed in a parrot costume.

@Arkle when is your album of the year list coming please? We may need more bandwidth

Thinking about it. I'm up in the northwest with family currently, will post something later in the week.
So, this week's new releases. Some good 'uns here.

The KVB - I mentioned their new album above. Motorik, quite poppy, very good throughout.
Jarv Is - remixes so nothing strictly new. Some good mixes and a reminder that the original album is very good.
Houeida Hedfi - middle eastern kind of classical and kind of post rockish at times. Really, really good.
Julie Doiron - indie veteran singer songwriter. High quality alt rock.
Richard Dawson and Circle - proper bunny! This is excellent throughout. At times beautiful, at times ridiculous, at times epic.
Jessica's Brother - very, very good. Debut album from a British indie band including a Wave Picture. Witty, engaging songs.
Lindy Fay Hella - slightly weird. Scandi dark folk goes a bit more commercial. Enjoyable.
Stealing Sheep and The Radiophonic Workshop - a weird one. the soundtrack of the 1973 animated sci-fi film Fantastic Planet re-imagined. Highly eccentric and a bit good.
Pye Corner Audio - pastoral electronica. Very good.

Album of the week:
clearly RIchard Dawson and Circle but the rest are good also.

A handful of new releases this week. They come from Arca (three of them according to metacritic), Blue Rodeo, GAS, Tom Morello ('The Atlas Underground Flood' which I guess is a companion to 'The Atlas Underground Fire'), The Waterboys (a 5 disc box set of the Room to Roam sessions and associated material), Jim Wallis & Nick Goss, Treetop Flyers, Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Deep Throat Choir, Mario Batkovic and Ichiko Aoba.

Hen Ogledd released a 6 track mini album a few days ago (no physical formats that I'm aware of). Seems weird timing for it to come out so near the Richard Dawson & Circle album, but as it contains a version of Little Donkey they probably couldn't wait too much longer. I've mixed feelings about the Richard Dawson & Circle album. Musically it's just a bit too proggy for me in places but there's still lots to love about it. I'm sure by the time I get round to do doing my top 10 of the year it'll feature.

Marissa Paternoster (singer of Screaming Females) had her debut solo album out Friday
There was also a (very pop) new single from Kayleigh Goldsworthy - RIYL Laura Stevenson (KG was last seen playing violin for LS' support in Philly last month), though this is more pop than usual.

My potted review of new stuff I've listened to over the weekend:

Christian Fitness: the current project of Falco from McLusky and Future of the Left. On bandcamp where they have several releases. It's more witty alt rock that powers through its 27 minutes.
Hen Ogledd: the EP mentioned above by @The Music Man. Mostly pretty obtuse. 'Tip Trip (Trip to the Tip)' is the obvious centre piece.
Jane Weaver: an EP of offcuts and remixes from Flock. More of her space pop. Pretty good.
Hedvig Mollestad: more jazz/rock/rock/jazz instrumentals. Five long tracks, maybe a bit more jazz than her stuff with the trio.
Essiebons Special 1973 - 1984 (Ghana Music Power House): a compilation of Ghanaian funk from the 70s and 80s. Excellent!
Can: the second release of their live album campaign. This one is recorded in Brighton. It's very good. As with the Frankfurt album, it's very different to their studio output.
Jim Wallis & Nick Goss: sort of ambient jazzish pieces loosely themed around water. Very pretty!
Gabriels: a new EP. Cracking songs, fantastic voice. Really, really good.
Jason Boland & The Stragglers: the Americana album of the week. Starts out quite straightforward then enters weird spoken wordiness in the middle. Very good!
Mario Batkovic: electronic jazz. Very good, features the always excellent Colin Stetson on sax on a couple of tracks.
Arca (4 albums): a lot to digest. Four follow ups to last year's 'kick i'. On early listening, 'kick iiii' is more guest heavy and approachable, 'kick iiiii' is more ambient, 'kick ii' more glitchy, 'kick iii' somewhere in between.
Witch Fever: all female hard rocking rock. They're good, they have hooks etc. Could be big.

Album of the week:
I'm going to go with Essiebons Special. It would be Gabriels if it was an album, not an EP.
