PC Wayne Couzens pleads guilty to kidnap and rape of Sarah Everard

Realistically the only changes that can be made are to make police vetting procedures more stringent and insist on police being in pairs at all times, ideally male and female officers where possible.

It’s all very well telling “Men” to do better and I understand how that would be effective from a cultural point of view, treating women respect on a day to day and how we should try not to make them uncomfortable but how is it supposed to prevent a lunatic like Couzens taking it upon himself to rape and murder a young woman?

Could start with not letting him join the Met and get a gun when there were clear indications he was a wrong 'un, and kicking him off the force and prosecuting him for the offences he committed prior to attacking her

The thing is, like any government agency, of which the Met are just one of many, once you’re in, it can be an exceedingly long and laborious process to get rid of people like that.

I figured I covered that base with vetting.
You would have expected extremely stringent vetting as if he'd been a new starter as he came from civil nuclear constabulary who are only really have jurisdiction within their facilities and are basically armed security guards.
Hopefully any inquiry will sort whether anything was missed. Unfortunately as someone has already mentioned no matter what vetting anybody has you cannot predict what will happen in the future.

You can have the best vetting system in the world and you will still won’t stop the odd nutcase getting through . Dennis Neilson was a cop .
Good luck to those wanting double crew at all times . Bearing in mind most cops are single crewed these days the uplift needed would be huge and extremely expensive. You could leave the establishment as it is and double crew but they would be even less visible.

For me. Whether couzens was a cop or not, he would have killed either way. His position however gave him a means/opportunity. Think i read a study or a few that the slope he was on where offending gradually gets more serious is common for murderers. Likely to have gone on again if he hadnt have been caught.

The double crewing is not possible with numbers where its hardly possible to put one cop out nevermind 2

If he didn't have any convictions before going into the Met what criteria would you use? What were the clear indications of him being a wrongun? His eyes are too close together?

The second bit is more worrying and I'm sure colleagues will usually stick up for each other.

That’s why it’s nice being a cop where I am. Double crew all the time.

He's already done enough while at Kent police to disqualify him from joining the Met

Most police offers will be decent and hard working people. However roles in authority are always going to attract bullies and narcissists. The Met needs to have better selection and vetting procedures and also allow and follow up whistleblowing with no fear for the person reporting issues.

What did you think of the Chief’s interview there? Came across as a prick to me.

Colin Stagg was never convicted mind.
Yeah, 13 months on remand, although convicted by the tabloid press until Napper was found guilty.
I read his biography a few months ago (written before Robert Napper was convicted of the murder). He's an odd bloke like.
Let's hope that never becomes an actual crime. What a number of the "tabloid convictions" have in common, is that the blokes who've been the victim of this are seen as "odd blokes".

How many modern day murders go unsolved? Very few I would imagine. That doesn't stop the minority committing horrible crimes.

I've no problem with people on license having to wear a tracker. Convicted of a crime, you lose your freedoms. 24/7 surveillance of everybody is open to too much abuse though.
About 1 in 3.
