The Pep myth

Almost seems to try to out-do himself tactically at times.

Prime example being the Champions League final last year with plenty of reputable sources reporting that no-one inside the club including the players agreed with him nor had any idea why he chose to set up the way he did.
Imagine the reaction on here if Johnson had attempted this masterstroke.

I’m sure I’ll get tons of abuse for this, so I’ll caveat in advance. He’s clearly a top coach. This is more a “is he as good as he thinks he is?” post

it’s now 10 years since he won the champions league. Despite having pretty much unlimited money at City and coaching Bayern, one of the biggest clubs on the planet

He got somewhat fortunate with Barca as he inherited arguably the best player ever in his prime

look at his City numbers. He’s been great domestically. But he should be when you look at what he’s bought. The transfer fees are from memory, so tell me I’m wrong

Ederson £35m (one of the highest fees ever at the time)
Walker £50m
Mendy £50m (even without the news he’s been crap)
Cancelo £40m+
Dias, Stones, Ake, Laporte at a combined £220m ish
Rodri £60m
De Bruyne £57m
Silva £35m
Jesus £27m
Mahrez £60m
Grealish £100m
Torres £25m

there will be more. Probably only one looks a shocker, but given the money surely he has to win more?

who has he sold at a profit? Sane?

who has he developed? Foden?

I’ll get pelters, but 10 years since a CL. With that money. He’s not the genius he thinks he is?

Are you forgetting the players he has developed elsewhere?

Allardyce would have won the CL at least twice given the same chance imho

Stirling was "good potential" when he got his hands on him.
Now a world class player.
Same as when Cole went to Fergieland.
Good goal scorer when he went, excellent all round footballer after Sir Alex got him.

Think it's a bit weak to say he's spent lots of money therefore should win the Champions League. No disputing he has spent money but there are a number of clubs with similar financial muscle/spend:

Juventus - Crippled themselves with an eye-watering wage bill (£400k per week on Aaron Ramsey for example) and have now fallen behind in the league

Barcelona - Well documented that they've spent hundreds of millions on transfers and wages

PSG - Have more money than City, spent gazillions on Neymar and others and chucked crazy wages at Messi, Ramos, Donnarumma etc on frees this summer

Chelsea - Spent £200m last summer

Man United - Can't remember the figures off the top of my head but iirc there was very little difference in fees paid over the last 5 years

For me, I can think of a couple of examples where one club has had so much more financial power than the rest (there will be more but just as examples) - Chelsea's first 5 years or so under Abramovic. The Real Madrid Galacticos. Man United in the 90s. Etc. You could argue City after the takeover, but by the time they were in a position to buy superstars, they were already competing with Chelsea, Barca, Real Madrid, PSG etc. I don't think they've ha significantly more spending power than the rest since Pep went there.

People go on about spending £50m on Kyle Walker but think nowt about Everton spending that on Richardson etc

Fantastic what hes acheived with city tbf. Theyll win champions league in a next few year imo

I don’t think it matters if it does, winning the Cl is a great achievement but it doesn’t indicate you’re the best team or manager in Europe, it’s cup football, which is why it’s so exciting

it’s also why Benitez could win it with biscan, Traore and baros playing, and di Matteo could win it with chelsea

the league is a much bigger indicator
The league is the measure, the CL is a cup competition so is not always won by the best team.
It's very glamorous, but in the case of Real Madrid, their streaky run in it just papered over the poor league return.

spot on

Sent nearly a billion point as City manager, and generally his best players were Silva, augero, kompany and de bruyne, none of which he signed. Got a lot from Dias, walker and ederso signings, but most of his other signings have been solid but not outstanding (laporte was for a time the rest have had periods of being outstanding to ineffective)

Always likely to get a good game when you watch his teams play , but he does seem to over-think himself in big games. I remember Barcelona V Chelsea (Torres goal) where he went out essentially with no midfield. He has a case to answer that in big games he strays from the method which got him there & it hasn't worked out in big moments.
