England v India (2nd test) Lords

I got ripped by a few for this at lunchtime-ish. After witnessing the England captain in tears after the match....anyone care to comment?
I was one. It was bizarre and seeing him in tears doesn’t make him selfish it just shows he cares. Out of interest where do you get this selfish thing from? I don’t think it will be a view shared by another single person in the population of the world. I’m genuinely curious.

if you are going that route Vince is a much better batsman than Livingstone

he has no real technical errors

he’d be my pick
Don't agree with that, and Vince has been tried and ailed. It's more about character anyway as everyone is playing in the joke competition so there's not much form to go on, and there's no way Livingstone gives it away like some of them.

Matters not really as they'll pick Pope.

I said he was a cracking batsmen and an inferior captain. This test match demonstrated both points.
He’s quite literally the only player we have who can be captain. The only who player nailed on to start is a 39 year old.

they all did

again I can’t believe we are talking about our number 7 after that

it makes no sense
He played a terrible shot early on and got lucky Kohli dropped a sitter. Not blaming him but you can see he hasn’t played much red ball cricket

I don't think his captaining is the problem. The players around him shitting their knickers as soon as the pressure is on is the problem.
The batting is rotten and yes that is a massive problem. The 'tactics' before lunch were utterly shocking and that's his fault, as he admitted after the match.

it’s not about charachter though mate

sibley and Burns have charachter

they just have absolutely awful technical flaws which exposed to good balls

they’d score no more runs with better charachter would they?

yeah that’s his issue he doesn’t plays enough

he averages 35 or someit? That’s fine like

no problems there at 7

we have 2 wicket keepers in history who average more than 40 at 7

it’s rare
That was on Indian oitches. So what. How often do we play on that type of pitch. He deserves a chance over here.

why does he?

he’s not as good as Buttler or bairstow

people were demanding he was in last year when he averaged low 20s for surrey

it’s just a strange thing people have

if he played for Leicester it wouldn’t be the case

I’d have Malan and Vince in the top 3

our 2 most techinly correct batsman

knee jerk but I’ve said it

they don’t get 7 ducks in a year
I was quite happy with Joe Denly, averaging 30, but his face didn't seem to fit and he wasn't one for the future. They dropped him for Crawley, he did ok, averages 30 as well, but his recent form is awful and they've now dropped Crawley for Hameed who never looked for a minute like a test player all game. Crawley is a classy batsman with a fine technique and will have his time. Reminds me of a young Atherton.

I don't think they'll give up on this series, so I don't expect many changes, but if they get thumped again in the third test maybe they'll throw in a few googlies. At some point quite soon they need to blood some younger players, blend with the handful of decent reliable pros they have, and stick the fuck with them. Pope should return from injury next week, I'd probably put Malan in there. I would put Crawley back fairly soon despite his test form, after a few innings for Kent. I'd keep Burns but not Sibley - but there isn't an obvious opener to replace him with anywhere. Abell at Somerset or Carlson at Glamorgan are in form, maybe Libby of Worcs as well, and might be worth chucking in but are not openers. Dare I say.... Jennings?!

Bedingham is qualified for England, isn't he... he's slagged off Cricket South Africa so much they'd never cap him now, surely??

Without his runs we'd be in a far worse situation......Still by far the best option as Captain with no stand out replacement.
But that doesn't make him a good captain, just the least worst. There is an argument for taking the captaincy away from him but that's not the way it's done in cricket. It oftens happens that when a team is doing really poorly, the captain's form suffers. I hope we aren't headed down that road. It must be tough to execute both well.

The article is a little old, but is an interesting read.

Aye I’m with you on denly mate I liked him

he just served a Purpose

he also scored 94 against Cummins hazel wood and co

the media used to mock him, George dobell especially

I think Root liked him

on openers he’s already in the side

hameed will get the series

not convinced he’s mentally up to it personally

he captained well the 4 other days and had a bad hour which he has admitted too

It’s a difficult one. There are in form county openers from earlier in the season such as Libby, Lees, Abell etc but none of them with the weight of runs that the likes of Burns, Sibley, Rocky and Jennings had when they were selected. I would have no confidence in a newbie getting a run. I would maybe go back to Malan with Hameed opening. He has earned his place and deserves more than one test.

It all has the feeling of re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. Maybe they answer is that we're just not good enough.
