New Music Releases Thread

This week's new listening for me, which is a mix of new albums and obscurities and on catch up:

Six Organs of Admittance: psych-rock weirdness. Pretty much great right throughout. Lots of guitar and a song about having problems with your teeth sung in French, what more could you want?
Rey Sapiens & the Congo Techno Ensemble: I guess this bridges the gap between congotronics and hiphop. Quite enjoyable, can imagine them being good live.
May The Circle Remain Unbroken: A Tribute to Roky Erickson: does what it says on the tin. A succession of artists who are vaguely influenced by Roky Erickson do his songs. Decent list of artists - Black Angels, Margo Price, Lucinda Williams, Billy F Gibbons, Neko Case, Ty Segall, Jeff Tweedy etc.
Grandbrothers: I'm way behind with this. Only picked up on it through this thread. I like it anyway. Keyboardy pianoey niceness!
Wavves: garagey indie rock with big pop hooks. I like it a lot.
Karen Black: mostly songs recorded between 1971-1976. Sketchy fragments in some cases. A couple of tracks recorded later (with Cass McCombs) sound more complete. Interesting.
Ixtahuele: a proper oddity. Dharmaland was a previously unreleased 1948 composition by Eden Ahbez (best known for writing Nature Boy). It's a sort of easy listening/loung jazz/exotica thing with hippiyish themes. An enjoyable curiosity.
Les Fille de Illighad: Malian (Tuareg) female fronted desert blues. This is a live album (recorded in 2019) featuring songs from their studio albums stretched out, as often happens live. Very good.
Maple Glider: Australian singer songwriter, quite piano based songs. Enjoyable. The last two tracks are particularly great.
Daniel Wylie's Cosmic Rough Riders: jangly guitars and harmony vocals, quite retro. I wasn't aware they were still a thing.

Album of the week: I'll probably give it to Six Organs of Admittance (well, I will give it to Six Organs)

Cheers - both Six Organs and that tribute album sound like I would enjoy them.

Wavves was right up my alley - enjoyed it a lot. Currently wrestling with the "do I buy it when it's only 29 minutes long?" conundrum.

I recommend the debut Moin album called "Moot!" that very recently came out.

Read this about them today - "One of those post everything albums coming out of England these days, with a heavy emphasis on Slint, This Heat, a bit of Mission of Burma, some Tortoise and yet another genius drummer in Valentina Magaletti. Really worth hearing."

I'm pleased I checked it out.

There are new albums this week from Anika, Darkside, Dave, David Crosby, Descendents, Jackson Browne, Kanye West, Leon Bridges, Mega Bog, Shiny Joe Ryan, Piroshka, Molly Burch, Alexis Marshall, Alasdair Roberts og Volvur, Emma-Jean Thackray, Amaro Freitas, Rodney Crowell and Rodrigo Amarante.
I’m off work with the wife and kids but will try and get Descendents listened to - it’s a collection of re-recorded very early rarities so I’m quite excited about it.

Will give Kanye a listen and Dave too, maybe.

My old buddy from Spring King is releasing his debut solo album tomorrow, might not be for everyone but I’ll post it up anyway

Edit: The link only has songs released thus far!

Surprised not to see any mention of the Mercury nominations on here (unless I've completely missed it!), suppose nobody really gives a shit about it anymore.

Anyway, they are

Arlo Parks – Collapsed in Sunbeams

Berwyn – Demotape/Vega

Black Country, New Road – For the First Time

Celeste – Not Your Muse

Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra – Promises

Ghetts – Conflict of Interest

Hannah Peel – Fir Wave

Laura Mvula – Pink Noise

Mogwai – As the Love Continues

Nubya Garcia – Source

Sault – Untitled (Rise)

Wolf Alice – Blue Weekend

A strong list that, I like every album on there that I've listened to.

There's an article on The Telegraph bemoaning the lack of Tom Jones on the list, apparently it would help if they had some established artists included. An interesting take on the Mercury Prize I suppose.
