Housing market Lemmings

Not jealous at all. I don't like the idea of people using property as an investment, rather than simply living in a place.

Actually, please accept my apologies. You're clearly not a "property speculator" and that's where my hatred is aimed.
By its nature an investment is placing money in something that will give you a return . Just so happens houses are a good choice though not Solid gold
( one house holder view)

Whilst I don't wish ill on people there is and has been for some time a huge shortage of affordable housing. Restricting rich people from mopping what is available up for profit should be restricted imo. Houses shouldn't be used for profit in this way.
I agree on the affordable housing, something needs to be done. What can be done, I am not sure as there are plenty of firms building but how do you force them to make them affordable?
When folk are paying £350k for a flat roofed box in Birtley it does tell me that the affordability threshold is higher than I thought.

I have a few houses , flats and commercial properties. All rented out at well below market value - in fact some below what they would be forking out on a mortgage.
Works very well for the tenants and I still make more than I would in a bank.
There is a place for decent landlords that serves a certain type of tenant , a one who doesn’t want a mortgage and doesn’t want to be tied down.
As in all works of life there are those who abuse it.

Council housing used to be the solution for those families who suffered during the war. But Thatcher sold them off.

Why do you rent out at less than market value?

I have always done it. I’m happy to have good tenants.
Some properties I could easily get double what I ask for if I went to the open market .
However all my tenants work hard and are decent folk who dont earn a huge sum so I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking for more.
Same with commercial property .I’ll look to raise the rent when they are established and doing well-gives them the best chance of growing .

Fair play, as long as it works for you.

I would do the same. Mutual respect between both parties. Hopefully the tenants will stay long term as well.
