England v New Zealand (2nd test)

Sat next to this fella on the train up... really nice bloke.

His hero when he was a kid was Ray Daniel. He was gutted when Arsenal sold him to Sunderland.

I''ve just watched the highlights, having avoided the score all day. Terrible. I wouldn't call this is a 'new low' for England, but it's there amongst the worst performances.

I found Silverwood's comments afterwards to be preposterous. This really is a humiliating display and we have been totally second best in every area. It's not good enough to say that 'players learn at different speeds'. These guys have been around long enough to play much better than that. The batting and catching, in particular, have been abject in this test.

There are so many problems with the England set up. The new system of Silverwood being judge, jury and executioner for all things selection is flawed as is the rotation business. The two opening batsman are a major problem even when they’re scoring a few runs each as it’s largely without tempo and positive intent which puts pressure on elsewhere and takes the game nowhere, the young players have all seemingly been told by someone that they should take guard just in front of point as to not nick it off, techniques are all over the shop, Root looks like he’s losing personality and character by the over, there is no genuinely decent spinner available and our two best bowlers came together when Noah brought them in on the ark and they can’t go on forever.

The winter could be grim

The absolute dog shit batting is dragging is dragging our only decent one down to their level.

The rest of the summer could be grim as well, fear we’ll get turned over by India now

Can you think of another test batting unit with averages as useless as this lot?

Burns 32.9
Sibley 34.9
Crawley 31.2
Root 49.1
Pope 32.3
Lawrence 29.9
Bracey 0

Here's the NZ team we played for context:

Latham 41.9
Conway 111.5
Young 24.0
Taylor 45.6
Nicholls 43.8
Blundell 38.4
Mitchell 75.3

And here's our team that was ICC #1 in the world in 2011:

Cook 45.4
Strauss 40.9
Trott 44.4
Pietersen 47.3
Bell 42.7
Collingwood 40.6
Prior 40.8

I dare say those averages were higher in 2011 too (I think they’re end of career averages). The current batting line up is as bad as it’s ever been. Even with Stokes to come back in.

They should. But Stokes, Buttler and Woakes will strengthen the batting at least maybe Moeen as well. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see Bairstow back in the side
Although Bairstow doesn’t have a test central contract, Silverwood should have sent an SOS for Jonny. Bracey way out of his depth with the bat, and average with the gloves.
Silverwood as bad as Peter Moores.

I agree with all that apart from the bit in bold. Our previous selection policy was from the dark ages for me. Its the right move for me and aligns cricket to most other sports. Hes just being undone by a ridiculous rotation policy and limited pool of players.

Agree about the winter being grim. Struggling to see us even competing at the moment.
Look at what the likes of Pant and Gill as young batsmen did for India to the Aussies in a similar situation over the winter, played without fear and won them a series
Positive mentality can work wonders in sport.
