New Music Releases Thread

There's new albums this week from Atreyu, Billy Gibbons, Crowded House, Hildegard, James, Liz Phair, Raheem DeVaughn, Red Fang, Rise Against, Rostam, Wolf Alice, Japanese Breakfast, Tristen, Trees Speak, Gary Louris, Loraine James, Hailu Mergia and the Walias Band, Marina Allen and the compilation A Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four.
Spoilt for choice here, coin toss who gets first nod, Japanese breakfast or Wolf Alice.
Gary Louris, Tristen and Liz Phair next.
And for old times sake, crowded house and James.

New track from Darkside ( Nikolas Jaar / Dave Harrington ) released yesterday. Really good, bit Unkle ish.

Also really like the new Public Service Broadcasting tune

Public Service Broadcasting return, new direction - berlin depeche mode inspired sound...

ditched their usp, sampling... i approve.
They haven't quite ditched the sampling, there's plenty of it on the new album apparently.

They've also used a Depeche Mode riff on this track.

The colours of the skater's costumes relate to the colour coding of each track on the album.

I’d never really given Wolf Alice a go before but this album is pretty good on my first listen.

“How Can I Make it OK” is the stand out, and sounds like it was lifted from the first Haim album, and I really like how it flows into the pretty punky “.Play The Greatest Hits”

Not enjoying on first listen. The missus just used the words "hate this" and she's a fan...

That Wolf Alice album has taken a few listens but I’m starting to warm to it. Interesting it’s metacritic score is fantastic, highest rated of the year currently.

A quiet week. Here's what I've listened to...

Mustafa - acoustic soul, I guess. He's a Canadian poet and singer. Pretty good, a little Bon Iverish. Brief at 24 minutes.
Tristen - again pretty good. Female indie singer-songwriter.
Liz Phair - somewhere between the grungey guitars of her early albums and the pop of her 00s output. I like this unlike the bloke who reviewed it for The Observer.
Marina Allen - another female singer-songwriter. A mini-album basically (7 songs, 19 mins) which is very enjoyable.
The Problem of Leisure compilation - a decent tribute to Andy Gill/Gang of Four. A lot of it is quite rocky. The best tracks are probably the ones that stick least to the original.
Loraine James - woozy, urban electronica. Glitchy at times, moves into dancehall and R&B. Very good.
Japanese Breakfast - a pretty good indiepop album. Enjoyable.
Wolf Alice - they're clearly becoming big. This is very good. The best tracks are probably the rockier ones and the slower acvoustic ones.

Album of the week: not the strongest week for me. Probably Wolf Alice, although Loraine James goes close.

Somehow I managed to overlook a new Counting Crows release on May 21. Not so much interested in the new material, though I'll give it a listen from habit, but it has an orchestral version of August and Everything After on the B (the missing title track of their first album)

Yeah I only found out about this last night when Frank Turner announced he was support on their US Tour

There are new releases this week from AFI, Alessandro Cortini, Azure Ray, Danny Elfman, Garbage, Islands, Jim Ward, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Mammoth VVH, Marina, Maroon 5, Migos, Sleater-Kinney, The Oak Ridge Boys, Joanna Serat and Andy Bell (the Ride one).
Ryan Adams is also releasing “Big Colors” tomorrow.

It’s all about the King Gizzard for me, but might check out AFI, Azure Ray, Lukas Nelson, Ryan Adams and S-K as well.

Ryan Adams is a dickhead
I’m still conflicted and didn’t listen to him from when the accusations surfaced until he released his new album last year.

It’s been 2 and a half years since the accusations and there’s been no more progress with law suits/police charges etc so I’m inclined to go with him being a dickhead rather than him being a pervert, which makes it easier for me to separate art from artist.
