How do you get rid of excess soil? Mine is thick clay like. I am planning on adding a gravel border to the grass along with a new path. Both will require removal of soil, soil that I don't really have anywhere to use.
Stick it in bags and take it to the tip, unless there is loads then hire a skip.

Check out the rules of the local tip though, some will only allow a certain amount. My local one says 5 bags per visit and I got stopped with a boot full when I didn’t know. Some bloke came over to tell me I’d have to come back, but turns out there was no time limit between visits. In the end we agreed to pretend I’d driven out and back in again.

They have changed it now to one visit per car per day. Next time I’m tempted to get my wife to drive up with her car empty and mine full and say I’m using her car too for my quota but don’t want to get them both dirty. Might make them realise what a daft policy it is.

I know the Beach Street one has a limit of 6 bags of rubble per visit. I didn’t know if soil would be classed as that though.

Dig a hole and bury it 🤔
And where do you put the soil you’ve dug out to make this new hole? I guess another hole would be a good start.

I think soil goes in the garden waste so shouldn’t be limited. Be worth getting in touch with them to make sure mind.

My lawn had drainage fitted 10 year sgo, so the ground has sunk with ruts about 300mm wide and inch deep, few metres long. I was planning to order bulk bag of top dressing mixed with seed and level off on top of ruts. I know nowt about gardening. Will this work and anyone know decent local supplier?
Cheers

nope, your not supposed to put it in brown bin

What you can put in the bin:

  • Grass cuttings
  • Weeds and dead plants
  • Twigs and small branches
  • Hedge clippings
  • Cut flowers and houseplants
  • Shrub pruning's
  • Leaves

What you can NOT put in the bin:

  • Food waste
  • Plastic, plastic packaging or plastic bags (including flower pots and seed trays)
  • Vegetable peelings and/or egg shells
  • Tea bags or coffee grinds
  • Large items of garden waste - such as tree trunks and large branches
  • Wood and timber
  • Soil and rubble
  • Turf

Chronicle doesn’t state a limit on soil but does on rubble. Personally, I would class would as rubble.

It wouldn’t be more than a few large buckets, I just don’t want to spread it back over the lawn when I’m planning on doing everything I can to change the make up of the soil away from that.

I remember when I dug the borders out in our front, filled about 45 rubble sacks. Was sick as when I finished.

Yeah, it’s surprising how much you dig from a relatively small area, dug two tonnes out making a small wildlife pond.

I have fields to 2 sides of my house, I just dump it and rake it in along the fence line.

Anyone know of local to Sunderland suppliers for bulk bag of Top Dressing with seed? I noticed Dandys and maybe Rolawn? Any others?
Cheers
I'm East Mids based so can't help but even b&q should be able to do bags of lawn dressing or any of the garden centres.

We want to do some more gardening today since it's forecast to be quite nice. Obviously garden centres are still closed, but some shops like b&m and b&q have theirs open as the shop is. Is there anywhere else like that that we could get a few potting plants to put in the trough planters?
