I could rattle off all the rough places in Hartlepool though if you want? I worked in every rough area in the North east & beyond putting them steel shutters on the empty houses in the 90s and honest Hartlepool was one of the worst (especially for it's relatively small size). It's the only place where I've seen kids systematically demolish houses brick by brick (Sandsend Cr).
Carter drive was a rough place to those who didn't live in it but the people who did (many of them) would tell you enough stories about how they would help each other out.
Some of those people were the salt of the earth and I know this from experience of spending time in some houses and knowing them.

To people living in better housing and a less deprived street, it was a no go area. But...like everything, it's about who you know and how you adapt to life which can change your mindset on something you maybe thought was a den of iniquity or even, at the other end of the scale, snob hill.

It’s got some very nice areas as well. It must be about thirty years since Sandsend Cr was demolished.I’m born and bred in West Hartlepool and still live here. I know the town has more than it’s fair share of half wits and poverty but to be fair, it has some lovely areas with very nice houses.

I live in Seaton Carew but the front is absolutely rammed all the time so we drive over to the headland and walk the prom from the steetley end around and then back . Great when the weather is ok but 2 weeks ago the wind was off the sea from the north and it took 10 minutes more to get back than it did to get out :). As the OP said , would have been to call in the Pot House for a pint at half way

It's rammed around here in Seaton this lockdown compared to last. Took the dogs onto the beach and the main (now bigger) car park was almost full yesterday. North Gare is a similar story. I tend to go out back and along the pathways and fields just the other side of the railway lines to keep away from them all.
It was never this busy this time of year in normal years, wish they'd open the bloody pubs and shops to keep everyone away

Hartlepool is a shithole mind, used to work on Bruce Crescent etc in the 90's
Hartlepool ISN'T a shithole . Try getting around the place. Bruce Crescent is not Hartlepool,it's a 4kin street area. All towns have an area that is not up to your standards. More new expensive house whichdoes include Wynyard ,the desired area for prem footballers and affluent people who love privacy.
Not strictly the Headland I think?
Near the Powlett area. Demolished now.

It was only demolished because the kids had done a half-arsed job themselves. The council (as it was then) had no intention of knocking down that particular street.
Agree about the nice bits as well though.

I've been all over it, know it like the back of my hand as I worked there for 10 years.

More millionaires per square mile then any other North East town. Stockton and Billingham are a far bigger shitholes and the people who live there are far more cuntish.

Aye well it's all relative.
Mind Stockton isn't so bad since they renamed the Blue Hall Estate

There's a hell of a lot of decent people and houses in Hartlepool, just like most places.
Hartlepool is a small dense town with a population that's seen housing make most of the farmers fields disappear as that population grows. (100,000+, iirc).

Condensing houses like they do will naturally lead to some of the streets becoming bad areas, mainly due to them being targeted by the councils who decide to put all the trouble makers into certain areas and basically poison it for the genuine people who've spent all their lives in those places, who now want to get out but find it hard to do so.

Drugs has a lot to answer for with this stuff and councils have a lot to answer for, for not giving a flying eff about genuine law abiding residents.

Worked all over the UK in the 70's and 80's . Lot's of towns and cities have poor areas. Hartlepool has expanded 4 fold since the 70's. Lot's of new expensive areas of housing. Try going to some areas of the 'BORO ,South Bank is like Lebanon on Tees.Suggest you stop living in the past. p.s. Bernard Bresslaw always played idiot in movies. Type cast for you ?

And ? That was in the 70's as you say. How's your waistline /hairline since then? Still same.I gather your I.Q. is the same.

Touched a nerve? Fuckin hell mate calm down.
I've worked in all those places you mention - I was in Southbank last week (Cromwell Road looking at the plastic flamingo on the nuns roof). Lovely people there but you think it's ok to call it "Lebanon on Tees". Tad hypocritical I think - and a slur on those fine people in the Lebanon.

We regularly go for a jaunt round the headland and have a half lot from Verrills.
The seaton walk is canny as well.

There was a youtube carry on about it...but, as has been said, it's been knocked down for new builds.
best chippy in the town(used to be).......... open very limited hours

Used to think of it as a shithole full of inbred knackers during my school years:p but its actually a stunning walk, with whitby like vibe.

Any of yous fancy a change of scenary for a stroll, park near Penrith Street, walk right round to Barkers place, grab a bag of chips and a pint when permitted, lovely imo.
It's a lovely walk but are we allowed to travel into Hartlepool for a walk at the moment?

Calling somewhere a shithole cos you worked there 30 years ago.

Nowt wrong with Hartlepool. Headland is a lovely walk down the front and on the piers. Ward Jackson Park another nice area along with the Marina. Bit further out you've got North Gate/Teesmouth which are lovely places for walks.

Yep. It's still decent enough and it is still limited in opening times.
The one further down northgate is canny as well. It didn't used to be too clever from what I remember, years ago but me and our lass got one about 2 years ago and it was nice.
Verrills do proper mushy peas and their curry's decent.
99% of the time I would get a half lot with scraps and a carton of mushy peas.
On my greedier days I'd add a carton of curry to that and a bun or a savoury patty to share with my wife. All washed down with a can of fanta or sunkist or sprite or coke, depending.

Oh, I do go on a bit. :)

No, still work all over Hartlepool, was on the Oakesway Industrial Estate last week so drove past Bruce Crescent (which incidentally another poster called a shithole as well - see above).

that other one used to be a bit scruffy looking so i never went in. I remember when myres avenue used to be one of the best(fish was massive). Headland is a grand place Mrs Cat(no) has only been up there once and it was where i took her for a walk, love the fish/block sands

Yeah it was a bit scruffy at the time and that's why I never went in, plus it was talked about as not being up to scratch. But, it changed hands and ended up decent. I don't exactly know what it's like now because it was a couple of years ago and Verrill's is always the one we go to if we decide to have a headland jaunt.

The miers avenue one used to be top notch. They done proper fish patties and what not. It was decent.
It was took over and went down the nick because it turned into an everything fishy and the standard went right down.
It was always close to empty every time I passed it.
