Johnson?

That’s not what I’ve been reading. Four four two and a false 9. Suits us because our strikers are awful.

I was just playing marra, but any manager with a set formation we should be wary of. I think a manager should create a style based on the players at their disposal and then as they bring in their own players they can begin to adjust and adopt their preferred style.

I just hope whoever we do appoint takes more risks and adopts an attacking philosophy.

Agreed:

Bit of a worry he fell out with our best player in his last job 😂

Craig Gardner 😀😀
Started at Villa but nice try
Looks like you know and I think it's obvious what we are getting. Just bring on the kids and, if they are any good, flog them while we can, in the meantime we just roll on in what has become the same old way.
I hope thats not the case. If we were to operate that model even in the championship you've get mpre fpr players and if you had a very good season your up. I do hope we at least get up 1 level.

Bellingham, Demarai Gray, Che Adams.

Oops, misread your post. He was appointed academy director in 2011. Redmond and Butland were on the fringes, so more when he was an academy coach.
Just googled che Adams and he was released by Birmingham at 14 and signed back later for a few million. Not sure that counts as a success.
I really hope he hasn’t been given the job on the back of Bellingham being the big youth story at the moment.
Seems decent from the couple of interviews I have seen and seems to have plenty of qualifications but nothing in his past to suggest he is going to be great imo.

Anything resembling a coherent plan has to be progress from where we are. And those who've been pleading for the younger lads to get their chance should be happy.

As long as the stuff about Johnson not giving youth a chance isn’t true.
I like the direction but the appointments have a lot to prove imo, although we were never likely to get people who didn’t.

I'm not sure Speakman will give him a vote on that, to be honest.

i'm actually impressed by someone we've hired. All his noises are pointing towards a takeover. Talking about the 'ownership group'. Good look to the fella.

Major concern is that this "Ownership Group" is going to involve Donald and Methven though. We need clarity on exactly what roles they are going to have, it's not going to end well for Methven if he thinks he can just rock up on a matchday like nothing has happened.

Have you heard Speakman’s interview. He wouldn’t be getting the job if it was true.

Yep. His recruitment looks like the weakest part of his armoury. Thankfully it sounds like that will be beyond his remit here.

A lot of those on that list are his buys rather than Academy products and they’re not particularly young. Others on there have shown themselves to be no great shakes at L1 level.

Semenyo is the stand out one but Johnson gave him a good few chances in the Championship before sending him out on loan to us. Maybe wasn’t using him right as he’s on fire for them this season.
There’s an argument that having so many young players out on loan is developing them. We’ve stifled decent young players by keeping them in u 23’s in my opinion.

Going to start picking the team himself again is he?

That was a rumour out about by Blues fans who thought he was too close to the owner (who they hate). He did apparently want to see a number of academy graduates in the matchday squad, but that was driven by his desire to provide the younger players a clear path they could follow. In that context, Leadbitter and Gooch are academy graduates. He wants to encourage the best young players to stick around, at least long enough to yield a big cheque.

It's a question of balance, really. Loan them out if they're not ready. Keep them around if they are.

Which is exactly what we should be doing bringing through young players is going to be vital longer term. we are probably hitting 4/5 academy graduates in the squad already tbf. Hume, Gooch, Diamond, leadbitter, Neil.
It’s a shame we have sold off so much of our young talent in the last couple of years.

There seem to be a lot of differing views on that, Southampton don’t Loan out as they think they develop better staying there. Similar to what Congerton said when he was here.

Speakman pretty much said as much himself. Some very telling remarks on young player retention.
