350m missing from pension fund. Hmmmm
Many have been in dire straights since Gordon Browns tax pension reforms sorry raid on Private pensions and there taxable dividends and fund surpluses. Many used to have big pots surplus to pay out defined benefits and now don’t hence the big switches to defined contribution schemes in the private sector.

The high street is fucked, we’ve brought it on ourselves, internet shopping and heading to venues (Metro Centre) for shopping, new generations are now used to doing everything at the touch of a button.

Towns and cities will need to adjust, I’m sure the regional capital cities will survive, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester etc, but cities like Sunderland need a strategy to develop city centres and that needs to be around entertainment, bars, restaurants things for families to do, jobs and education, attract the young’uns in. Should help the smaller independents with the footfall, but the high street is no longer.

Yup loads will start collapsing now, people will see that the Lockdowns have really killed the economy , paying wages is not enough.

Nobody will want to open up places that size. City centres are goosed now because of this. People think it won’t effect them but everything is linked, these guys will have it suppliers, maintenance contracts, transport. All this wfh crap and stay at home stuff will not work

Debenhams and Arcadia have nothing to do with Covid and is more to do with arrogance of owners not wanting to adapt (Green) or owning a business stuck in the 80's that no-one wants anymore (Department Stores / Debenhams).

Close retail and business parks. Force businesses into city centre with incentives or something easy like that.

The domino effect of Arcadia is being felt by Debenhams here because they have outlet stores of Topshop and the like inside Debenhams. Feel so sad for all of the staff and it does leave a massive hole in the high street.

The one in Eldon Square and MetroCentre are massive. Really hope someone can come in and save it.

Agreed. Mike Ashley even proposed the easiest solution years ago, internet sales tax.

Think it’s too late for that, these are well established and I see more of these out of town developments still happening. Councils need to start denying these requests.

Even those are going bust. Shit chains like Laura Ashley, petts at home and the like all closing up in retail parks.

A very brief overview is that many do, but it’s very difficult for Councillors to resist when developers dangling job creation and economic benefits over them.

Wouldn’t be so sure about Leeds mate. Like a ghost town.

There isn’t really much wrong with those chains.

Apart from being snobby one produced high end furnishings at a high price and the other is very practical for anyone with pets.

It’s not practical for everyone to use local small traders for everything and the alternative is everything goes online.
