Last week I finally got the new back wheel so I managed to complete most of the rebuild of my (29yr-old) MTB into go-anywhere adventure touring bike. I still need a new front wheel to properly finish it off but god knows when the new rim will turn up, wot with the world we live in now. I need to get new pedals & new panniers to replace my old touring panniers that are literally falling to pieces, then just need camp sites & hostels to open up properly and I'll fuck off :)
It's a steel frame from the time before nonsense like suspension was invented and I have fitted 50mm road tyres. Replaced all the old knackered 7speed bits for new or newish 9speed Deore stuff. It rides like a dream.

That looks lovely. I’m growing fonder of older bikes.

I have a spare Mavic 517 on an XTR hub which I may have inadvertently purchased whilst tipsy if you’re atuck

No that's OK mate. I can still use the old front wheel for now - the rims might wear through on the braking surfaces any day now, they are that f***ing concave but it's still rolling. I got the new 9 speed rear wheel so that's enough to get it on the road. I got my lbs to build a new pair of wheels so they ordered the rims I wanted but the supplier just sent one because that's all they had in stock. The other one is waiting on a shipment from the netherlands I think but no one knows when it will turn up in this post-apocalyptic world.

what apps do you lads use if any? I use the garmin app and link it to Strava. Only just got strava and to be honest the garmin app appears to do everything strava does without the segment challenges?

No problem. Good luck finishing the build. It’s great to breathe life back into the old girl.

Does Garmin allow you too look at other riders ?
Not bothered about data much nowadays and a reason why won’t upgrade to Strava. I am a nosey bugger mind and do like to see what others are up to

just open ya eyes and wipe the sweat out of them, when someone flies past ya marra ;)

I aimed to retain the look of it's age rather than do a full respray & bling rebuild. If nowt else it makes it look like a scruffy bike that's hopefully not attractive enough to be nicked. Part of that was keeping the old mudguards that have been on it for over 20 years. I originally fitted mudguards when I started using it with a child seat, then trail-a-bike, and they made it more practical as it evolved into a pub/shopping bike. If you look closely you might see that the front mudguard is a bit crumpled at the front. This is from when I once tried to drive through a car park height barrier in Portsmouth with bikes on the roof 😲 This bike took the full load but the mudguard was the only damage to the bike, whereas the roof bars collapsed and the roof of my BMW sustained some eye-wateringly expensive remodelling.

I use urban biker, was a quid or two to not have adverts, does everything I want and you can upload the trip to Strava after if you wish. Think you can subscribe for more in depth stuff, but I just want live stats while I'm cycling.

where do people buy their chains from ?
Normally just get Cycleworld to change them while bikes are in for something else. Given how busy bike shops are lately guess I'd better do my own.

After KMC 11 speeds and I can see reasonably priced silver and black ones, they look crap.
The plain silver "normal" 11 speed chains seem far more expensive than I'm used to paying.

That looks nice. Brings back memories too. Me and the wife bought a pair of Marins in 1995, rigid mtb's. Had them 20 years. Long gone to recycleyourbikes now.

I’ve just bought a replacement from an eBay seller named toby28ha. He seems to have shimano chains at 70% of the price others are charging.

I love touring - I often jump on a train to get out of the northeast to Yorks, Northumberland or Carlisle (Lakes) - then cycle. I much prefer the B & B option as I get a bit older!

I only use a large saddle bag now for my clothes. I did have Ortlieb panniers, but I now love the Restrap brand (Yorks company) which is awesome.

I'm tempted to do something with my (not nearly as old) 2007 giant rainier mtb

i dont use it anymore and have'nt done since i got the road bike, but i quite fancy the tinkering part - thinking about maybe going for a swap to dropbars, possibly 1*, etc

I always use KMC chains. Never had trouble with any of them. I don't use any of them fancy 11 speed thingys anyway. A 1/8" single speed chain for fixed gear will cost you about 6 quid. It's the way forward.

nah think I'll give single speed a go...need 11 speed for both "best bikes" a bit more than £6 unfortunately

Without the faff of breaking chain to see how long it needs to be, how will I know if 114 or 118 links are needed ?
semi compact 52 chainring with 28 tooth cassette
