New Music Releases Thread

It is boring now mate, any novelty there was has long gone.
Four tets new studio album from a couple of weeks back was very good. Similar stuff recently from George Fitzgerald, Max Cooper, Wrangler, Tornado Wallace have been very good.

Also mate, every day the Test Pressing website put a guest daily mix called stay home & chill. Some really good stuff.

Stay safe mate.

They also pick a random old album each Sunday mate and review. I remember they give Springsteen - Nebraska / dr Dre - the chronic / Prince - 1999 a 10 also.

Did you listen to the DJ Python album from a couple of weeks back? It was enjoyable but seems to be getting better reviews than I expected.

I never realised that the bloke/lass from Throbbing Gristle died a couple of weeks ago?

liste to it today and it’s ok, didn’t really have as much of a groove as what I hoped. The first couple of tracks were a nice build up but it didn’t really go to far from their as I’d have liked. Bit one paced I thought.

best electronic album of this year so far is inner square - rubicon.
exactly what I’m in to at moment.

My summary of the new/newish stuff I've listened to:

Shabazz Palaces: interesting if quite low key. A continuation from the last two albums stylistically.
EOB: A bit dull TBH. Lies midway between Thom Yorke's solo stuff and Phil Selway's solo stuff.
Sir Richard Bishop: someone I've not really listend to before beyond the odd track on compulations. Mostly instrumental, mostly guitar but with some skronky lo-fi electronica thrown in. Very good.
Marillion - so 1983 isn't that recent but the deluxe reissue of their debut is very good indeed. A bit prog but Fish's vocals are a bit post-punk. The live bonus tracks are excellent.
rupa - the Disco Jazz album I posted about. Top stuff! Four tracks of, Indian disco jazz essentially (probably higher on the disco and Indian than the jazz).
Skylar Gudasz - well worth a listen. Female singer-songwriter. Obvious contemproary comparison is Angel Olsen.
Nathan Fake - electronica not quite made for the dance floor. Avante garde at points, quite listener friendly in others.
Plone - electronica not made for dance floor. There's a kids' TV thing going on (think Moomins or Clangers) but a lot more as well. Some will hate this, I love it!
Primo - post-punk from Australia. Enjoyable but it's not necessarily something I'll go back to repeatedly.
Fiona Apple - I like it but don't love it. The percussion is excellent but, ultimately, are the songs any better than those found on the first 3 or 4 Regina Spektor albums?
Ty Segall - pretty good for a freebie. Six tracks, all Nilsson covers. Pretty sure I've heard Coconut done by him before so he may have played it at End of the Road a few years back?

Album of the week for me: A toss up between Marillion, rupa and Plone. As Plone's album is the only strictly new release in those three, they get the nod.

I thought EOB to be dull. I was disappointed as I enjoyed his 6 music performance. I especially liked also the single Brasil.
I read also that the album was specifically influenced by Screamadelica and how he was likewise fuseing different genres to create something euphoric and uplifting. He failed imo

I think Brasil is the best thing on the album by far.

I do love it, but never mind Regina Spektor there aren’t even many songs that are better than those found on the first 2 Fiona Apple albums.

I've not listened to them enough. As I said, I love the percussion on some of it. From what I've read, she used similar techniques to Tom Waits on Bone Machine.

Am I missing something with the Fiona Apple record? It is okay but I don't see what makes it stand out. I think it peaks with the first track! Only one listen like.

I thought the same only I got bored with it around the halfway mark  Will give it another go.

As I’ve got plenty of time on my hands for stuff to listen to and it’s a 3rd of way through year, what’s your top albums of year in case I’ve missed anything ??

id go, Holy Fuck, Dan Deacon, Baxter Dury, Frazey Ford.
