Sterling & Gomez Bust Up

Because it involved two players. Southgate mentioned it in his statement about club rivalries being put to one side in the squad. This was obviously not the case here so each player was equally to blame. Its exaccerbated the problem and could cause division within the squad.

Seems like Sterling has accepted it though, and reports suggest that he was in the wrong? Wouldn’t be right to punish both if so.

So despite Southgate saying Sterling was at fault, Sterling saying he was at fault and the official statement saying Sterling was at fault, people on here think well known “Scouse c**t” Joe Gomez (who is from London) is to blame?

And not to mention the obligatory wacky jokes about how Liverpool are never to blame?

Brilliant post... apply that irrational thought process to every subject on here and you have it one.

Hard to judge without knowing what actually happened. Why not punish them both for bringing club issues into international football? It wouldn't be great management if this spirals (footballers are divas) out of control and Sterling refuses to play for England again.

If he refuses to play for England again then fuck him.

These things are usually well short of surrounding context by the time they reach the press. We don't know what relationship the two players might have had before, what the specifics of the 'windup' were, or what happened in retaliation. Given the media have a record of having it in for Sterling, I doubt this was a small decision for Southgate.

Just because he's a good player there's no room to just give him some daft talking to and letting him play on. It's actually good to see IMO. I'm sure Sterling will suck it up also.

Almost impossible to keep it in house. It would have been leaked at some point and then more made of it when it gets leaked.

Sterling has admitted he's let emotions getting the better of him. Don't mind that for the right reasons. Him and Gomez both young lads & will learn from it hopefully.

Sensible decision to drop him for 1 game and get the backing of the team for his decision. It draws a line in the sand as to what is and isnt acceptable, but it also sounds like they have resolved the issue between them.

Seems like sensible management from Southgate, as he went on to say.

Gareth Southgate said: “We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday.

“One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we’ve been able to separate club rivalries from the national team. Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday’s game were still raw.

“My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken. Now that the decision has been made with the agreement of the entire squad, it’s important that we support the players and focus on Thursday night.”

Bit oversensitive I think. I know Southgate is keen to stamp out club rivalries given the havoc they played with the so-called 'golden generation'. But this sounds f***ing innocuous and I can quite understand why Sterling would be pissed off by any big time charlie shit from Gomez, given Gomez played for precisely 3 minutes of the match and Sterling was, despite losing, one of the best players on the pitch.

I mean, dropping out best player for a bit of handbags. Nah, not having it.

The comments you’re on about were typed before Sterling said sorry and there was very little context to what happened. The Gomez comment you made I agree with.

Lots of the players like Gerrard and Neville of the past said we struggled with club rivalries and they disliked one another. Southgate is using this easy game to make a point when we can do without Sterling. You could say this has happened At a good time actually. In future players will think twice about acting the twat. Gomez will feel shit about Getting Sterling kicked out and Sterling is a warning to anyone who wants to act the bell. Good that it’s probably our best player as it shows them who’s really in charge.

As long as Sterling learns from it and eliminates his short fuse. On Sunday, near the end of the match, he lashed out at a player (can't remember who) after the ball and the player had gone over the goal line. The ref saw it and did nothing about it.

Earlier in the game he got shoved into the boards by TTA well after the ball was dead. The ref saw it and did fuck all. That and the VAR stuff definitely got his back up. He was antsy for the rest of the match.

It doesn't matter one bit when nearly every team qualifies anyway and England are there already
Probably, just think could have been handled internally. Obviously we don’t know the facts like so can’t judge fully but seems to just fuel the fire by making it public like this.

Even leaving the radio and media reports aside, despite the fact that Raheem Sterling has apologised for his actions, despite the fact that Gareth Southgate confirmed that dropping Sterling was a decision that the squad agreeed with, some people on here are dismissing the views of the only people who witnessed the incident and are blaming a "scouse kernt" who comes from South London.

There's also a narrative from some of "you can't do that, he's our best player", an attitude that really paid dividends in the Golden (shower) Generation era.

Time was when Sunderland supporters had a well deserved reputation for being knowledgeable not only about the club but football in general. There's a few people on this forum who have torn it to shreds with their idiocy.
