Parkrun Thread

Only recently started on this myself, dragged my park run time down to 25:30 or so, which I'm fairly happy with for four months of (half-hearted) effort. What I've found hard is pacing myself for easy runs - I tend to go balls out and then fall over in a heap after covering far less distance than I wanted. Best solution I've found so far is to join up with a running group - the run together website has plenty who you could get in touch with, and a lot of them are free - so it's more a social thing. Managed to do about 7 miles on trails last night, very slow (11+ mins per mile) but far and away the longest distance I've ever run. Hopefully that can boost my stamina and help me get more out of intervals, and thus drive my speed up a bit.

Mind, my long term aim is more about distance than speed. If I can crack 25 for a 5k I'll be fairly happy with that. I want to be able to get a respectable 10k time together and then look at pushing towards half-marathon length, if I've got that in me.

mate, don't know how old you are, weight etc but I started parkrun about 30 mins and got down to 24 mins. then joined a running club and have done 10K's 10milers and halves. never thought I'd do it (age 46 now, 6ft and fairly hefty) but smashing them. If you can do a 25:30 parkrun you are doing decent and the distance thing is just about saying what the F*** and doing what you've done and go with a group and doing it. Enter a 10K race 3-4 months away and get on it. You'll smash it. The worst thing that can happen is that you put it off for a few months/years and lose this time. Do it.

Great advice, I wish I’d joined a club sooner!

Its a wierd thing isn't it. you want to learn to knit - join a knitting club. play the flute - flute club. fight - well, we don't talk about that. but running clubs - people think that you have to be Mo Farah to join or they'll just mock you. every running club I know are really welcoming for new members and everyone who joins goes "ahhh - not so scary after all - its brilliant!".

Absolutely spot on mate, I expected there to be a minimum standard to join one so I set certain targets in my head to get to before I joined one when I didn’t have to do that at all.

I could have joined at my fattest/slowest and improved with them, it definitely would have been more fun but I’ve had my eyes opened now which is the main thing!

Let me know how you get on. Be handier for me if it's any good like.
It was canny, quite busy like. Course is a bit twisty, not flat, I reckon Sunderland is quicker.

Check out my running activity on Garmin Connect. #beatyesterday

I pushed hard and was still just a 21:16. Disappointing.

Finished 11th and fastest in my age group so must have been a few missing.

I must have passed you (walking in the opposite direction ). I'm ruled out indefinitely so went for a wander up this morning. The winner passed me at the top of the hill and he looked fresh as a daisy, the ones behind him less so.

Shaved another 30 seconds off my time. Consistently been reducing it at least 10 seconds every go. Got it down from 29 to a still unimpressive 27minutes, but quite the achievement considering I was touching cloth from about the 3k mark.

A not-so-guilty pleasure is pacing myself - easy first lap, moderated second - and using the little left in the tank to sprint past about ten people by the finishing line. Sad, but I've got to get some enjoyment in life somewhere.

On the subject of running clubs, the thing that puts me off is the assumption I'm joining as a social thing and having a load of middle-aged women pre-emptively giving it the whole 'as if!' patter, like I'm in the slightest bit interested anyway.

Skipped Parkrun this morning in favour of a long run which I thought would be 10 miles however I shit my pants 6 miles in, no choice but to run home from that point so only did 8 miles!

That’s also me not trusting a fart again for a while! :)

It’s as social as you want it to be tbh, some folk are rarely seen unless there’s a race on.

Got myself to Durham this morning, just jogged round and chatted to Pell and another mate. First one in months
