Best city , Leeds or Newcastle

It's not just Leeds, it's a Yorkshire thing. I work with a lad from Sheffield and he has a grossly inflated view of the place.

They can be as deluded about their county as the mags are with football at times

Overall Yorkshire is actually brilliant tbf. As you’d expect really given it’s 4 already large counties.

No. They went there for uni or work but came home every weekend and waxed lyrical about it. My point was that they banged on about how they moved away but we’re home at every opportunity.

I’ve been down for a few nights out and gigs and that. It’s fine.

Every weekend?

Always had problems getting in bars in Leeds, either with a group of lads or a few couples, went once with Marjorie and my mate and his wife and were told groups weren't allowed in, f***ing farce of a place.......

Newcastle is quality, a lot of people take it for granted because its on our doorstep....

Overall it is good. But to listen to a Yorkshireman it's all fantastic and better than anywhere else on the planet.

Manchester gives Leeds a run for its money as a city, Teesdale is as good as Yorkshire for Dales and a fair amount of it is nothing to write home about. Unless you are from Yorkshire of course!

Daytime you have the quayside option ,even popping over to Tynemouth , both good for bars on the evening plus I know Newcastle a bit better as in the lesser known haunts
Never understand this when people say the Quayside. I’ve just moved away from there and there’s only a few bars down there and they’re mostly crap. Which places do you go to?

Talking more as a place to knock about not just eat and drink .Don't know Leeds that well so maybe missed bits
On the quayside you have the market ,Baltic, sage etc with nice views rather than be on a random street in the middle of a city

Every weekend. I was there.

What odd behaviour.

You’re tagging together things that are in different counties there. The point about Yorkshire is it’s so large it has loads of good things in it. Whether or not you should consider it as a whole thing I dunno.

Just like London is such a large city it has loads of good things in it.

Durham particularly is badly marketed. It's a beautiful spot and on the train it's not that far from London and on the tourist route to Edinburgh.
The northeast is terrible at selling itself outside of the region. To an extent I understand why the Durham Dales arent overly marketed, but even our tourist attractions like Beamish, Hartlepool Quay and the Railway centre at shildon are basically unknown once you get out of the county!

Completely agree. I think the same about Sunderland too. For too long it’s tried to compete with Newcastle. The three cities should be looking at each offering something different to one another but complementary. If each was accessible from one another in under 30 minutes by good public transport that would help.

Never been able to decide, always thought it was a bit nip and tuck, with little between the two , but having visited Leeds for first time since late 90s, I have to say I now think Leeds is far better than Newcastle , in terms of pubs, restaurants and shops.

Having lived in Leeds for the last 20 yor but previously considered Newcastle to be my stomping ground and still visiting occasionally, the following is clear.

Up until around 5 years ago Leeds was more expensive with a cocktail costing around £7 whereas the same could be secured for around £5 or 6 in Newcastle. They seem to be about the same now.

Pub beer prices are very similar too although I found it slightly cheaper in Newcastle until recently.

Leeds would appear to be better served with restaurants, both quality and quantity

On the whole, I'd say there's very little between the two cities now but Leeds just shades it.

I think probably the riverside shades it for the two cities.

There’s no difference between the two with regards to food.

Leeds in my view, although got a good kicking down there in the 76/77 season walking back to the centre after a draw, Easter Weekend if my memory is correct. Although my memory is good enough to remember what happened at the end of the season.

They could probably tell you’re a scrunter imo.

Skived off school when I was about 13 and went to a midweek match at Leeds. Was walking to the ground with me mate and a 40 odd year old Leeds fan spat on me. What a gonk.

Newcastle wins this one for me (not for that reason mind).

In terms of architecture and urban design I much prefer Newcastle to Leeds.

Leeds is such a mish mash of mostly shit 20th century monstrosities of all shapes, sizes and styles, it genuinely give me a headache walking around the place. It spoils the nicer old and new building and also my mood whenever I have go.

Newcastle city centre is just a more pleasant place to be IMO. The better shops and bars etc in Leeds don't make up the difference.
