SMB Tennis thread

I think Tsonga-Nishikori is the stand out men's match and Cilic-Dimitrov does seem too early for a 2nd round match.

I see Kozlova has just withdrawn, so Svitolina has a free pass to the 3rd round.

Yeah, Dimitrov has fallen away in the rankings quite alarmingly through a mix of form and injury. First round defeats at both Wimbledon and in the US Open hit him hard - you'd have to say he was a tad unlucky to meet Wawrinka on both occasions as Stan can beat anyone on his day.

Decent performance there from Muguruza to comfortably advance. Sets up a 3rd round match with Svitolina. Tsitsipas a set down, but looks on his way to levelling it.

I assume it's just the contract they have but I've never understood why ITV only show one match at a time. It's not as if ITV2 and ITV3 is showing much through the day on a weekday. Or even have a red button option.

I know they will obviously get a lot more viewers for the bigger names but selfishly it's not really of much interest watching a qualifier win six games against Nadal when Medvedev and Herbert were deep in the fifth set earlier on.

It's a similar situation here with Nadal when Tsonga and Nishikori is on at the same time. ITV and Eurosport both showing it of course, although as you say, ratings.

I'm a bit pissed of when itv show same as Eurosport

Yeah, it is very annoying, especially when Eurosport 2 isn't showing tennis until much later.

The draw may be opening up nicely for Konta here.

Yeah, topsy turvy match and it would have been very interesting to see what would have happened had Konta been broken when serving for the match at 5-3, but fortunately, she found a couple of really good second serves and managed to save all 3 successive break points. I still think the match with Kuzmova is 50/50, or 55/45 at a push, certainly won't be easy, but it's clearly much nicer than had she have faced Bertens. I feel very sorry for Kiki, has a fantastic 12 months, up to a CH #4, recently won her biggest title, bookies favourite to reach the final, her year has pretty much been built up to the slam she's most likely to win, and then boom - all over just like that - must be awful for her and her fans. Bencic is in a similar situation to what Edmund was in the other day, coming back at the business stages and one poor service game and that could be that - if she goes out then it really will be wide open as one of Siegemund, Konta, Vekic and Kuzmova will be making the QF in that little section.

The women's side has been decimated by retirements and withdrawals unfortunately - Andreescu has also given Kenin a walkover to the 3rd round. I suppose the men's has been a bit as well with Anderson, Isner, Kyrgios and Raonic all withdrawing before a ball was hit and then Felix AA a little later.

Just as well I didn't put that Bertens outright bet on @chopsfc007

Thiem about to lose the 4th set, be a massive shock if he goes out, only player outside of nadal/Djokovic who has looked like winning the French the last two years

wow, great recovery by thiem 2-5, 15-40 down coming back to win set 7-5

A few more shocks on the women's side today, or certainly seeds going anyway. Anisimova put out Sabalenka for the 2nd straight slam and another 17 year old, Swiatek destroyed the 16th seed Wang 6-3 6-0, although she was the slight pre-match favourite there. Siniakova put out the seeded Sakkari who had been in good form on the clay and Blinkova came from behind to beat Garcia. There's still 2 matches to finish, but there's only 4/14 seeds through in the top half. Osaka did so well to recover again, that's twice in a row now where defeat was looking likely.

All the top 10 seeds have made the last 32 in the men's. Hopefully Goffin can at least test Rafa a bit tomorrow. Stan and Dimitrov meeting for the 3rd time in the past 4 slams.

Pliscova out martic very impressive

Aye, she hammered Mladenovic 2 and 1 the other day which was a bit of a statement in itself and followed that up here, pretty comfortable as well. That section has opened up massively as either her, Kanepi or Kudermetova will be in the QF. Looking at that 3rd quarter, Martic will probably fancy her chances of making the semi final as well.

Good to see navarro go out and a youngster through this mertins game is great.
