Basic knowledge

the need to retain any sort of information, knowledge or skills isn't as important now that we have every trivial piece of information at our fingertips.

i remember playing games like 'name the capital of so-and-so country' , or 'what is X-football clubs stadium called' or even knowing the route to places like certain campsites up the lakes or to my aunties in manchester, off the top of my head.

there is no need for this type of brain development anymore. people are getting thicker, in general. no doubt

I have lost count of the times I have watched quizzes on TV when the contestants have said that Geography is not their subject, it is almost always women.Come to think of it, they also say the same thing about History.

Precisely what I was saying to my lass the other day

Used to work with a woman who, when I told her I had watched 'Drain the Ocean' on TV , re the Titanic, she asked me if they had actually done that, and how come it had worked so well, she was a bit bemused when I told her they had not, and it was done with computers.
Specialty subject is often hollyoaks

A lass at work was convinced that dartboards were made from the hair shaved off coconuts and that was why they made such a fuss about scoring 180 - because they won another coconut which then got sent away to help make more dartboards.
That is so random

Peoples lack of geographical knowledge of the UK can be appalling. I work down south occasionally and while I dont expect people to know where Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland or even Durham are, I would expect most people to place Newcastle or Sunderland on a map.

Shocks me how many can be so off with it.

If there’s no microwave, make a sandwich.

Seriously though, we’ve only had hobs for a relatively short space of time. I’m sure people before that were disgusted that their kids never learned how to cook a stew over an open fire in a huge pot.

Stuff changes.
I did actually mean an open flame not a halogen plate .

Things do change but even though I'm not suggesting preparing kids for armageddon, they should be given basic life skills and preparing a meal is one.

Sadly there is a great need for this sort of brain development but people will be happy thst they don't need to do it. Could be a massive cognitive time bomb for all we know.

Our brains are becoming about as healthy as our bodies.

I meant an open gas hob too.

Gas hobs are relatively new technology. Can you cook a meal on a campfire? If not then you’ve succumbed to new technology and have almost something that was once a basic life skill.

Surely making palatable, nutricious food is a skill worth preserving. No matter what the devices used to use to cook it.

This thread reminds me of a thing I read last year.

Imagine a time traveller went back and met a caveman. With him he had a iPad (other tablets are availiable). He showed it to the caveman and explained.

"This little device contains almost everything humanity has discovered. It contains our history, our literature, science, art. It contains advice for those in need and navigation for those who are lost. It has up to date news and with it I can communicate with humans all over the world

The caveman looked on in amazement

"But mostly we use it for looking at naked ladies and pictures of cats".

In a world where children have endless resources of knowledge at their finger tips, it amazes me how much basic information they are missing!

Other than when a solar flare takes out all our satellites.

But it’ll take out everything electrical on the planet as well so the least of your worries will be how you get to Grimsby.
You’ll be crying when I use my map reading skills to find the coastline. I’ll be eating all my fish, you’ll be walking around peterlee lost

I've absolutely no idea how to work a loom or dig a coal face like. Life skills change.
What do you mean use a compass? I just follow the stars

I still remember my first car registration and my first house phone number.
I have no idea what my current ones are

I still remember most of my childhood friends phone numbers despite not seeing most of them for over 20 years. If put a gun to my son's head and ask me to save his life by reciting his mobile number - that kid is fucked.
