UK’s first EV rapid charging station in Sunderland

All great in the long run, I completely agree.

Once we've gotten rid of all the shit burning coal and gas stations we'll be living on clean power and clean cars.

However right now; given the pollution created and the energy losses involved in battery production, electricity generation and battery charging, EVs are no less polluting than an economical diesel.

As I said before, they are the future, but not until the power grid is brought up to scratch.

Can you please provide links to back up your assertion that EV's are no less polluting than an economical diesel.

If building that road cuts down traffic jams and therefore exhaust fumes in the City then 100% it will improve it......Also organising the road system properly. Changing North Bridge Street to two way traffic has reduced queues around the one way system on the North end of the bridge, changing the top end of Roker Av and the road past the Uni to two way traffic will massively cut down on the length of journeys and pollution also. Currently to get to Tescos from Roker means going via Sea Road or the one way system, it is utterly mental.

Building a new road to ease congestion is like a fat bloke with an eating problem loosening his belt.

Please explain

You may pay your money to a company who generate power from a renewable source, but the actual power which enters your home comes from many sources via the grid. There’s no method of directing electrons from a renewable source into your home specifically.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s better you money is going to a renewable company, but you are not necessarily using renewable power.

This is where the real clean energy is.

However, realistically, the national grid will need a massive overhaul to cope with the change in power generation/usage plus the massive increase in demand that will come if there's a large scale uptake of EVs.
There won’t be a big uptake of EVs IMO. Tech is still too expensive and the infrastructure is no where near ready. Why buy a Renault Zoe for £18k or whatever when you can get a much better car for cheaper?

Why are they so expensive?

Pioneering tech is always expensive. Remember CD players and MP3 players being dead expensive early 00s, dirt cheap now. A 50 much TV back in late 90s would cost you a few grand, now you can pick them up in Asda for under £300. My argument is, how many people are going to pay over the odds to be the pioneers and drive around a f***ing Nissan.

Even when the price goes down I don’t think people will be keen. That’s before you start talking about radius, charging times, infrastructure. Never mind performance, looks, diversity etc. Never mind 20 years, it’ll be a couple of generations before it’s really going.

I reckon the government will have a hand in "forcing" people to use electric vehicles. Little things like low emmision zones which will be so prohibitive for fossil fuel burning cars. Smart technology can't be far round the corner where they can tax you for every mile you travel in a diesel/petrol motor and make it free in an electric.

I’d still love to know where everyones gonna plug them in considering nee fucker parks on their drive/garage.

Cables out of windows?
