We had RE in school like. To be honest I never found it an indoctrinating experience, just learning how a large population of the planet live. Never understood the furore over it.
Bored the tits off me at the time like but it's funny how how the same people who complain about it tend to have developed very strong feelings about religion and learn about it themselves, then try to stop others learning about it. Interesting.;)

Whether you believe in any of the major religions or not they have shaped humanity probably more than anything else, I think its pretty important kids know about what they are. Learning about nationalism and fascism in history isnt to try to convert you to a brexiter, reading animal farm in english isnt trying to provoke a proletariat uprising and thankfully learning how to draw in art isnt necessarily going to make you end up an arts major.
Debatable

Not only that but I suppose it gives kids an opportunity to get things out into the open, so to speak. We should be discussing religion as much as possible rather than sweeping it under the carpet. For me it's the best way to counter religious extremism as well as it's far right wing opposite - by getting all the information (and misinformation) out there, into the open.

51st you titpiece. Who's the 51st and 52nd in your noggin?

I did Lord of the Flies.
There's a metaphor for Post-Brexit Britain for you
Same, think I done the railway children and the Tempest as well. Read Nineteen eighty four at home, which I think made me see the world in a different way to what I had before I read it.

Years ago, I made my RE teacher cry arguing religion and from then on I was told I could never go in the class again. As punishment for the rest of my school life, I was forced to watch Schindler's List in a room on my own when everyone else was having RE. Not really a punishment apart from the sods always started it from the beginning every week so I only saw the first hour

at school.

I don't want either of mine partaking in that shite, I know they don't have assembly anymore where you have to sing Hymns and say the Lords prayer (fucksake).

Alluah Akbar

Yes it is, it is a mandatory subject......There is no indoctrination goes on, it is taught from the perspective that "this is what some people believe".......It covers all the major world religions, kids are encouraged to question it and critique it and are given an array of source material for them to analyse. It also includes modules on atheism and humanism btw and the vast majority of kids in RE classes up here identify as atheists.

It is a hugely important academic subject that allows kids to critically think and consider the implications of peoples belief systems and how they impact on the wider world. As the vast majority of the world bizarrely do identify with one of the worlds major religions (around half the world are Christian or Muslim) then to not understand peoples beliefs and the implications of those beliefs is to not understand most of what goes on in the world.

Eventually it won't be probably because secularisation will increase, but for now, particularly now, it's probably worthwhile

This is true in a small number of countries like the UK.....Strangely the vast majority of the world are still strongly religious which I find bizarre.....Listening to Americans praising God at every opportunity makes me cringe.

There has never been an issue with it, right until half the UK decided it hated Islam. When people now talk about not wanting their kids in RE what they often really mean is "I dont want my kids taught about Islam"

What did you say to make her cry?

Agree fully. At school in the sixties it was largely all gentle boring mundane stuff. Sing a couple of hymns on a morning then get RE once a week when largely you'd reading stories about the Good Samaritan etc. Was a state school mind so maybe the Catholics had a different experience!
Looking back have never thought we were being brainwashed or any shite like that, if so it obviously never worked because most of us turned out to not give a fuck about religion!

I won a bar of Fruit and Nut in RE for a report on a visit to Durham Cathedral. I'm all for religious education. I was taught that God gave us free will. Turned me into the sceptic and fat hooer that I am today.
