New Music Releases Thread

Working through new and newish releases gradually over the weekend. Thus far:

Ustad Saami - this may be a tad niche. He's a 75 year old Pakistani classical singer who sings traditional pre-Islamic songs in a variety of languages. Certainly an interesting listen
Durand Jones & the Indications - not quite so niche. Old school soul basically. Good fun and well performed!
Pond - I like but no sure I love this. May take more listens but I think I preferred them when they were a bit more garage rock.
Little Simz - exciting and inventive. Hopefully with this, she'll get the attention and sales that a lot of male UK hiphop artists get.
The Hare & Hoofe - quite brilliant and also quite mental! Imagine the Super Furries jamming with Sparks then go weirder. Came out last year, I believe and much championed by Marc RIley. Ostensibly an EP but they've included a suite version of all 8 tracks running together. Everyone's new favourite band!
Robert Forster - literate, understated pop songs. Basically, what Forster has been doing for decades. Very good!
Self Esteem - I always kind of liked Slow Club, although to a degree there were diminishing returns as the albums rolled by. Both members have now made their solo debuts and both are really good. Charles Watson's album from mid to late last year is a proper grower. This is more immediate ans, essentially, R&B influenced indiepop, if that makes sense.
Cactus Blossoms - harmony based countryish band who were on of the bands who played The Roadhouse in season 3 of Twin Peaks. A good listen. There's an Everly Brothers feel at times, Roy Orbison-ish at others.

Still got a few things to work through (including Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, of course).
I was disappointed with the Self Esteem album. I liked the first two songs I heard from it, but the rest of the album is lacking for me.

Fair enough! I really enjoyed it on first listen. Not up with either Little Simz or The Hare & Hoofe though.
Haven't heard either yet, but I will give them a listen. Currently listening to the new Masionair (a band my son likes, but that are too wimpy sounding for my taste) as my son asked me to give a listen. Not as bad as I thought it would be, there are a few songs on there that I liked. Cape Francis is next on my list - their last album is one I like to play while I read a book and smoke a jazz cig.

Might give both a listen at some point...

Is it Mansionair you mean? Aussie synthy indie band?

On the basis of one song, Cape Francis sound pretty good...
 yeah, yeah, that's the one. So I made them French, f***ing sue me;)

I think you will enjoy Cape Francis. Mellow stuff.

Quite enjoying Cape Francis. Thanks

So, this week's releases include albums by Townes van Zandt (posthumous obviously), Amanda Palmer, Buckcherry, David Gray, Dido, Flight of the Conchords (a live album but with unreleased tracks), Foals, Gesaffelstein, Helado Negro, Juice WRLD, Light Conductor (bloke from Besnard Lakes is involved), Meat Puppets, Patty Griffin, Sasami, Sigrid, Stella Donnelly, The Wild Honeys, Dave, The Stroppies, Jim Jones & the Righteous Mind, E.B. the Younger and Blick Bassy.

Not sure I'm overly impressed.

Let’s hope the ones you have missed are better

Not a good sign when my likely pick is a comedy album (and I don’t mean David Gray)

No one listen to Solange's album last week?

It's pretty good albeit not as good as her previous record. A Seat at the Table is one of the best albums of the last decade/two decades admittedly so would have to be some effort to match it.

Same for me. As well as FotC, Foals are the obvious listen. Meat Puppets are good but post-reunion have been nowhere near their 80s heyday. The Stella Donnelly album could be interesting. She's an Aussie singer-songwriter who made a completely solo EP last year which was a decent listen. Her album is with a full band. Beyond that, Jim Jones is a bit Nick Cave/Gallon Drunk-esque, The Stroppies seem to be an Aussie indiepop supergroup consisting of members of bands I've never heard of, Dave is one of UK hiphop's great hopes, Blick Bassy is a Cameroonian blues/jazz/folk singer songwriter and EB the Younger is the current Midlake singer (the one who did vocals on the not that great fourth album). oh, Helado Negro is on Sufjan's Asthmatic Kitty label, which makes me think his album could be interesting.
