Tony Towers

Tony Towers was excellent - hard as nails. Scared of nobody. He played for Birmingham after us and he thumped one of his own men and I think it was Mark Dennis. He was hard.

He’d walk into any Sunderland team in the last 40 years. He had similar attributes to Souness, though not quite as good. Got a couple of England caps while at Roker

Why did we sell him, Anyone remember?

Interesting that Gornik won the semi final on the toss of a coin and the crowd at the final was less than 8,000.

Any idea of why he celebrated with the Vs?

Probably because our support drowned them out all day.

Not really sure, but we’d just been relegated and discovered a midfield trio of Arnott, Elliott and Rowell.

Bobby Kerr replaced him towards the end of 76/77, so I think it might have been a few things

He was no softy - Joe Boltonesque IIRC

I've been watching the Manchester City game v Schalke in the CL and the commentator happened to mention about City winning the 1970 CWC, which I knew about. However what I didnt know is that Tony Towers was in the Man City side that beat Gornik:

Tony Towers was a good player for SAFC. Monty of course needs no introduction to any SAFC fan.

It’s a flashback to a time, when I went to matches at roker park, and walked back along that same road to catch a bus. Number 18 bus stopped near to mill view club

Can remember being inside a bus stop stand with two coppers on each exit, whilst the mags walked back to the train station

Tony Towers one of my all time favourite Safc players. When we signed him some supporters thought he was a straight replacement winger for Tueart because he wore no. 11

Towers was excellent...England class but as a swap for Tueart and Horswill plus cash...poor deal....he played in the CWC final at 18...I'm surmising injuries stopped his potential..my favourite fact about him is his nickname...' Growler'.

I don't think the Horswill part of the deal was too bad mind.

Yes he played v Team America but it wasn't counted as a full international. Played against Wales I remember.
