Returning to the north east after 44 years

Although born and bred in Sunderland (Hylton Castle, Millfield) I have lived away for 44 years - Manchester, Surrey, London, Herts and Bucks.

Me and my darling wife are "coming home" to live near Durham in January. It just seems the right thing to do for many reasons and we are both looking forward to an adventure.

Any tips / advice.?

Looking forward to;

- seeing more of my family
- being near a beautiful city and countryside
- being closer to the seaside
- going to the SOL more often
- getting away from the south which gets more frenetic by the day
- cheaper beer
- etc.
Look if you have just bought a two bedroom maisonette in Washy just say so. There's nee need for all the ganin on.

I would’ve moved in the summer myself like...

Met a wife on holiday a few years ago who kept telling me she was from Durham, turned out to be Easington Colliery.

Hardly f***ing Durham , pet.
Although I was born in Newcastle I lived in Edmondsley for 9 years and then Great Lumley for 6 years (parents still live there). I still use 'Durham' when people ask where I'm from because of my accent. I suppose more in the county sense rather than city. Most people I meet Down South haven't heard of Chester-or-Street (unless they are cricket fans).

I'd love to move to Northumberland and if it wasn't for the family situation I'd do that in a heartbeat. If I love another 12 years or so I'll move there once both kids are at uni or moved out with jobs.

You get more house for your money and it's nice to see family/friends. But Bucks is much better than Durham.

I suppose familiarity breeds contempt. When we moved to Aylesbury it was quite a charming ex market town. Now it is a sprawling mess. For example, no point in going out in the car between 8-9 am and 4-5:30 pm as the whole town grinds to a halt. However there is some stunning countryside and we will miss places like Waddesdon, Wendover Woods and Stowe. The nearest coast is 100 miles away.

My mate moved back to the town , after 40yrs away said it's the best thing he did . Less noise, crowds and pollution. And he now lives 10 min from the beach.

I wouldn't move back permanently, not into Sunderland anyway. Maybe somewhere in Northumberland or up the Dale.

People are right, once you've been away for a really long time it's not the same place as you remember when you get back to visit.
