"A student leader who sparked outrage by saying a mural dedicated to soldiers in World War One should be painted over has resigned.

The artwork, in the University of Southampton Senate Room, shows a degree being given to an unknown soldier.

On 24 October Ms Dawes tweeted: "Mark my words - we're taking down the mural of white men in the uni Senate room, even if I have to paint over it myself.

The mural, painted by Sir William Rothenstein in 1916, was completed as a tribute to students who were killed in the First World War and were unable to collect their degrees."


Do you reckon if she posted the same tweet but it was a mural of black men she would be arrested for a hate crime?

I don't think every piece of artwork is worth saving.

Don't have any issue with the mural, it doesn't seem to be overtly dedicated WW1 casualties from the pictures I've seen perhaps there's a plaque or something.

She's not really the problem, the only reason she'll have said this is because her circle of friends and the piece of social media she hangs about on not to mention how insane student unions are these days will have promoted the idea that white men are the most evil on the social justice ladder and therefore are game to attack at any time you feel free.

I think it's just that she lives in a particular world of SJW hierarchies where it's ok to have a go at white men. If this was black men or white women I don't reckon her reaction would have been the same.
