England in Sri Lanka Red Ball

I sense some sarcasm......

He looks great. Not a dasher either, so some difference.

But what happens with Bairstow back?

Either way, I think we have to stop thinking of Stokes as a top six batsman some time soon. When was the last time he contributed more than a scratchy 30? More and more a bowling all-rounder.

If we don't have the top order batsmen to displace one of the 6,7 and 8's then the some of these 6, 7 and 8's need to spend time in the nets learning to be top order batsmen.

Buttler, Stokes, Ali and Bairstow should all have the talent to bat higher if they worked on their defensive play and cut out the tail-ender shots.

Maybe Foakes?

Not sure about Stokesy either. His batting has gone completely off the boil.

Fantastic days cricket there

England were a bit gung ho in the morning but I thought burns and Ali were a bit unlucky

Only root n stokes really gave it away

Fantastic by foakes

As people say it’s a Dilema as it’s another number 7

I am not convinced that the players people are talking about are good enough to bat in the top 3, it’s harsh sayings it’s attitude, it’s a specialist position

I’d probably bat Stokes 3 as he does have the technique and in England especially is good against the new ball

Good rearguard batting.

Well done Foakes, Curran and Rash. Give us summat to bowl at least

Curran looks genuinely good with the bat, exciting

Maybe Foakes?

I wouldn’t go that far, I thought he did ok when he came back last summer

We are getting there in my opinion, it’s just about getting the people in the right places

To be fair to Buttler he’s been brilliant he doesn’t give it away at all

Ali got a class ball and did play very defensive at 3 in England but he shouldn’t bat there

As I say stokes could but not Bairstow he has too many technical flaws

But he has to play

Don’t agree about Stokes marra

He will get there, he’s just working out the best rhythm

Yup. Personally I'd give Stokes (form-wise) a lot of slack, the last year can't have helped his cricket but we know he's a class batsman and it will come back sooner or later.

Agreed

Looks like he’s trying to work it out again

I think Roy will be number 3 in the ashes anyway

We could go something like this in the ashes

Anderson
Broad
Curran
Root
Woakes
Foakes
Buttler
Ali
Stokes
Bairstow
Morgan

At least this way we wouldn't have to worry about openers, Root and Ali are in their preferred spots and Buttler, Stokes and Bairstow are in at 7 or below. I added Morgan as he's in good form for a number 11 and doesn't really play red ball cricket, just what the selectors are looking for.

In all seriousness I don't like this phrase "bailed out by our lower order", it was true in the path, but to be fair to Ed Smith he did an interview in the summer and said he was going to do it differentlly, but just getting the best cricketers on the pitch, the idea being that in the XI you will have enough runs and enough wickets with people maybe not contributing massive scores but all adding up to a greater sum

Its an interesting theory like, and not convinced as you do need a solid top order IMO. But if Ali was to get the odd 50 and the odd top order wicket batting 3 for example, you could argue that is enough to justify his position, especially if the likes of Woakes, Rashid, Stokes, Curran etc are all doing the same.

Bit shit what they did with the supporters in Kandy like.

Sri Lanka government/cricket authorities are amateurish as fuck like.
